Ghostface Killah of Wu-Tang Clan
  • Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan appeared on Angela Yee’s satellite radio show and said some pretty appallingly misogynist stuff. He criticized some woman who apparently said she screws a new dude each month. “For a female, that’s not nice.” When Angela pointed out the double standard there, Killah said, “That’s what’s wrong with our people and #&@$%. They put our women equal to men. We’re not equal.” Then he continued to criticize Karrine Steffans, who wrote Confessions Of A Video Vixen. “I would never wife that. She had so many d***s in her mouth…I ain’t never made one of those my partner,” he said. “If I f***ed a bitch and it was like that, then I just f***ed her and that was that.” [Salon Broadsheet] — Charming fellow, that one.
  • Some “pro-family” group called the American Family Association is pestering the CEO of AAA (the peeps who help you out when your car breaks down) for recognizing gay couples in its Family Membership policy. [American Family Association Action Alert] — Click through to read the sad, bigoted letter they’re asking people to send.
  • The 2009 Miss Black USA Pageant happened on Monday. Twenty-eight women (not all states send someone) competed for a $5,000 scholarship, a load of makeup, and a trip to Ghana. [Washington Post] — We’re not the biggest fans of beauty pageants to begin with, but a pageant celebrating black women’s beauty could actually be a good thing.
  • Intense: a photo essay about a Mexican prison where moms can raise their children behind bars with them. [Global Post] — This one’s not easy to read.
  • And now some good news! A study of 70,00 wannabe engineers has shown that female engineering students don’t drop out. Defying the stereotype that college women drop out of math-y programs, this study shows that while only 20 percent of engineering students are female, they stick with it more frequently than men do. [Chronicle Of Higher Education] — So. How about you ladies engineer some lids for pasta sauce jars that I can actually open?

I vote that we all go to the AFA website, use that form and alter the letter to say how proud we are that AAA is recognizing homosexual couples as married.  At the very least, it may overload the server so fewer hate messages can get through.

@abbyln I thought of that, but I wasn’t sure if the AFA screens the letters to make sure they’re all complaints first before sending them on to AAA. I’d suggest just emailing the CEO of AAA yourself and saying thanks for recognizing gay couples that are married. He needs to hear from us!

People who are Ghostface fans aren’t really surprised by his misogynistic views.

About the 2009 Miss Black USA Pageant, how could separate but equal EVER be a good thing? Really, Frisky, be serious. It’s like Affirmative Action in a way, but if there are separate competitions for different races in all aspects of life, we are just going to become a more segregated nation. Obviously, other races should be more accepted and included in the Miss USA Pageant, but creating an additional competition for only blacks is, well, racist in a way. How could you support that?

@Coral I think the pageant was created in response to the fact that most pageants only have one or two black contestants. The Washington Post article says, “Organizers say the Miss Black USA Scholarship Pageant was founded in Prince George’s County in 1986 to showcase leadership among African American women, and to provide an opportunity “to young women of color to develop the whole woman, mind, body and spirit.” It seems like a vehicle for black beauty queens to be judged by the beauty standards unique to them. I don’t think it’s just a coincidence, for example, that all the black contestants in mainstream pageants have processed hair and weaves. The photos show that at least one contestant was comfortable enough to wear twists while competing at the Miss Black USA.

@Annika Harris: Well, I understand the purpose, but, it’s not a great solution. There are so many things that create separate things for different cultures. Why can’t we all judge beauty without judging races? And why can’t we all come together? I just don’t think it’s a positive influence to have ‘separate but equal’. Because it’s not equal. Although there are currently not many black contestants in the pageants, what if there was an only white pageant? That would probably be illegal and not allowed. So how is this fair? I think many people would like to see other races represented in pageants, but it is also hard because mostly white southern girls are interested in pageants.

^^well now if that was true there wouldn’t be a need for a miss black usa pageant, would there? i would love it if we could “all come together” as you’ve stated but as long as beauty is based solely on european standards that minority women are often unable to meet due to physical ethnic characteristics then there will be a need for miss black usa pageant. using the phrase “separate but equal” to describe this situation ignorantly compares the founders of the miss black usa pageant to the members of the supreme court who sent dred scott back into slavery.

There are plenty of non-white Europeans, so just say what you’re going for: white barbie girl standards.

First of all let me say this. I am half black. But I still think that an all black pageant is racist. How is it fair? Is an all white pageant fair? Obviously not. End of discussion.

@ joyy

thanks smile  that’s a much better way of saying it.

@ coral

so i assume that you would be more comfortable if they dropped the name and then allowed people of other races to participate in the miss black usa pageant? if the majority of the women in the pageant were black but it wasn’t restricted to black women would you still see it as racist?

I wrote a letter to the AA prez thanking them for including gay families. Thanks frisky staff for including that story!

@anonymiss: Well, it would still be racist, considering white IS the majority in our country. I’m just expecting a fair percentage of whites, and other mixed races.
