Today In Terribleness: The Worst Edition, Ever.
Some really awful things have happened this week and, unfortunately, a huge percentage of them happened to women. We know you don’t exactly enjoy reading about this kind of stuff but, hey, it’s important. So here it goes.
- Okay, this story is really awful. A Massachusetts woman named Darlene Haynes, 23, was found dead in her closet after neighbors complained of a smell coming from her house. Worse still—the woman’s 8-month-old fetus had been cut out of her body. The baby could have survived, but would have needed medical attention ASAP. It looks like someone may have literally stolen her baby. Horrible. [CNN]
- A 28-year-old Georgia woman is facing charges for running what appeared to be an underground strip club for minors in her basement. Cops showed up after neighbors complained about the loud, late-night partying at the house, and when they busted in, they discovered a debauched scene, fueled by dollar Jello shots. [WSBTV]
- Goldman Sachs lawyer Todd Genger, 33, was busted by undercover cops for trying to solicit a 15-year-old girl via the internet. He was going to meet her in Westchester, and, presumably, things were going to get pretty raunchy. This nasty dude knew the girl was underage and didn’t care, even though he’s married with three kids. [NY Daily News]
- WARNING: STOP READING UNLESS YOU REALLY THINK YOU CAN TAKE IT. On Sunday, in San Antonio, Texas, police officers were called to a home where they found a mother on the couch, trying to slit her own throat, and screaming, “I killed my baby! I killed my baby!” She didn’t just kill her 3-week-old son. She dismembered him and ate many of the parts, including part of his brain. This is 1,000 steps beyond absolutely horrifying. Was following the San Antonio case. I don’t understand if they new she had mental problems in the past why the heck did her family help her or monitored her before this happened? I just don’t get it. They knew she was mentally ill and they stood by and did nothing.

Seriously….?
@gloriafretz ditto. Anyone who doesn’t believe in capital punishment I pose this question; Do you miss Timothy Mcvey? How do you feel about Charles Manson getting parol hearings every 3 years? That’s what I thought…

That last one. Just… JESUS. CHRIST.

The first one is horrific and was clearly premeditated. It’s just… terrible. Sad. Despicable.
The second two are bad but in a different class than the first.
The last… yes, clearly the woman is insane, and once the baby was dead, nothing else was going to hurt it more, but it’s horrific. While I feel for the investigators in the first case, those is the last case… they’ll never, ever, ever be able to erase that from their minds. I don’t know how I’d ever handle having seen that.

By the way, I strongly recommend against reading the linked article on the last case unless the summary didn’t particularly bother you.

ooo, thanks for the heads up. I’m eating a particularly delicious ramen meal, and almost clicked the link…
would hate to waste my last packet of lime & shrimp flavored ramen b/c I couldn’t stomach eating ever again :(
thanks!
and seriously, how do these types (the third one) of cases even happen!?!? isn’t this *why* we have a Department of Children & Families??? :(

@eskim00ninja, No, I don’t miss Timothy McVey, but he probably would have received a long sentence anyway. And it doesn’t bother me much about Manson—I don’t think he’ll be getting out anytime soon, given the heinousness of his crimes, and he’s quite old now, anyway, and probably too screwed up to do much harm at this point. As far as I’m concerned, killing someone is killing someone, regardless of whether the intention behind that killing is good or not. Killing a criminal is just as disturbing, to me, as killing a good person. I know that’s not a popular view (there aren’t many deontologists out there), but the whole idea of capital punishment is really disgusting to me. I don’t think killing people who kill people sends a very clear message. Also, I think that killing criminals is a way of letting them off easy, rather than forcing them to spend the rest of their lives in misery in prison…

@belongsomewhere: manchuren, and it really is fabulous—very lime-y, which is a nice change from overly salty
but, I’ve only seen it sold at the commesary (marine grocery store), which is pretty lame. :(

oh and @eskim00ninja & gloriafretz:: I would probably have less moral qualms a/b capital punishment if it were actually effective in deterring crimes—but it’s not, so I’m against it.

@belongsomewhere and *sam*: Ditto about the capital punishment.
The last story, I think I read on BBC or CNN that she had schizophrenia. It is so disturbing that you kind of have to force it out of your brain or else it would give you nightmares.

I’m not sure about my views on captial punishment, still sorting it out… but what I do know is that they need to make jail a little less comfortable than it is now.

Schizophrenia, in my opinion, is truly one of the worst and most debilitating mental disorders. My grandmother suffered from it back when the only treatments were electroshock therapy. In no way am I defending the woman in the last story, but I feel bad for her because I have seen all too well the destructions that schizophrenia do to the patient (that is assuming she is schizophrenic).

I had an instant reaction to the last one by thinking “this is why some people shouldn’t have children” but then that almost contradicts my disinterest in capital punishment - taking away peoples’ lives for killing others but taking away peoples’ right/ability to have kids doesn’t even out does it? I bet that doesn’t make sense - I’m on 4 hours of sleep.

aries3_04: well, if you concede that while some people *shouldn’t* have kids, but still have the *right* to do so, then no, your position can still make sense.

Well, in somewhat brighter news, the baby from the first story was found, and is “in fairly good health”, to quote the police.
The last story vaguely reminds me of the Andrea Yates case - both women had severe mental problems that were overlooked by everyone, and both eventually committed terrible crimes against their children. I would guess that both women had postpartum in addition to another mental illness. It’s sad though, that they wouldn’t/couldn’t get the help they needed before they hurt their children.

Otty Sanchez (the woman in the last case) apparently has a history of mental illness and was/is suffering from post partum psychosis. According to a local psychiatrist who reported on the issue, most women who have some form of mental illness can suffer from post partum psychosis. Not only that, but apparently her partner has schizophrenia (or that’s what my dad heard).
I really wish she had gotten help. It’s really tragic what happened to her baby boy :(

@Chebs: re Andrea Yates… was recalling the same thing. I always felt her husband should be occupying a prison cell right next to hers, after forcing her to get pregnant over and over, AND dianosis of PPD/Schizophrenia.
