Thoughts From Guys On Our IM: Rubber Usage

So, you know that story we’ve been chatting about lately? The one about how one in four New Yorkers with multiple partners (potentially a reflection of the rest of the country) doesn’t use condoms all the time? Well in addition to our poll(s) on the subject, I decided I wanted to pester the guys on my IM about this because I think it’s kind of easy to say to blame dudes for low condom usage—after all, they’re the ones who have to strap ‘em on either at their own discretion or because the chick they’re having sex with makes them in order to get any nookie. So do dudes leap at any opportunity to go rubber-less? Let’s find out.

I don’t understand why men simply don’t carry condoms. Why do women always have to carry the burden (and the cost!)? Also don’t men get the whole idea of HPV??? Scary!

Guys don’t carry condoms because the only storage we have is a wallet, where they tend mangled just from daily use. Since you can’t trust one that’s not in perfect condition, it’s best just to have all parties keep ‘em by the bedside. Maybe in a punch bowl.

Yeah, don’t they say you’re not supposed to store condoms in your wallet cause they get, like, effed up? When I was single and minglin’ I always had my own little stash. Or hell, would pick one up along with a Snapple from the deli!

Um, I feel like a whore…I have condoms in my nightstand, and I get to use them once in a blue moon when someone will have sex with me. I didn’t realize guys equate that to “slut”. I thought it just meant I protect my assets….

I don’t think the responsibility should fall solely on the guy. When I was single I would keep a supply on hand in my bag and in my room. If you don’t have any then you should pick some up from the store before you get busy. Planned Parenthood gives them away for free if you don’t want to spend the cash.

@Deirdre - Guys don’t worry about HPV because they can’t get cervical cancer. Who cares if they’re spreading it around if they’re not personally affected.
@Simcha - I don’t think that’s whorish at all. It’s safe and smart—whereas these guys (and a huge percentage of NYers apparently) totally aren’t either safe nor smart!

Ugh, I really want to slap Sensitive Guy and the girls he’s sleeping with.
Most women can’t get off from penetrative sex AT ALL - does this mean they refuse to do it? No. Just because he can’t get off from sex with a condom, oh well, he’s not doing it because he’s a man and they deserve orgasms goddamit!
There are plenty of ways to get a guy off after intercourse if he hasn’t come that are much lower risk.
Ok, so unprotected oral isn’t a great plan either, but come on… hand job? Facial? Boob sex? His ‘I can’t get off with a condom’ excuse is just #&@$%.
And damn right the responsibility shouldn’t fall solely on the guy - women should be insisting that their partners wear condoms, and have them on hand when guys whine that they don’t have one. As for getting them to wear one - I find that getting out of bed and getting dressed will have a guy rolling on in seconds.
