This Look Is Not, And Never Will Be, Attractive
I need to get something off my chest. I hate this GUESS ad. I hate it because it features a rather attractive guy wearing what could only be described as a “denim duster coat” with bleach spots. It is perhaps the most hideous ensemble I have ever seen on a dude, like something out of Justin Timberlake’s closet circa 1998. Every time I see this ad—and I see it a lot because it is running in all the current fashion, women’s, and gossip magazines—I want to take my thumb and stab holes through the paper. Why is GUESS still around as a company? Who shops there? What man shops there? Can someone please tell me?

Regarding the photo, easy does it on the judgements in this article, now. How else will women with low self-esteem get their best features across?

it’s interesting that the tired slutty cowgirl look didn’t provoke your ire… clearly, that’s less offensive than an acid-washed denim mancoat.

[As to the dude in the picture] The coat looks ok. What I don’t get is the ascot and two button down shirts, with one obviously being too small. That patch of belly isn’t hot, it just makes you look like you can’t pick a shirt that fits.

I know my brother shops there and it’s still a very popular store. They are located in all the popular malls here in the Bay Area (CA). While I’m not a big fan of the denim duster jacket thing, I do like their clothes on men…

Actually my ex from highschool totally bought a pair of their pants and when he wore them they were extremely tight.
My best friend end up saying he looked like a closet homosexual. I was like, that’s horrible. I myself thought the pants made his butt look nice, but I guess that was just me. Lol…

The good thing about Guess jeans is that they have waist and inseam measurements making it much easier to find a pair in your size. The bad thing about Guess jeans is that they are so often distressed and bedazzled to death that you don’t want to own a pair even though they do fit well.

@C.Munro- it still hasn’t gone away. I know a family with 4 girls ages 17-27ish, they’re all about six feet tall, and they all have huge hair. Every picture of them, they’re tilting their heads to one size, all in sync, and I have to wonder if it’s just so they’ll get all their hair in.

I’m from Houston—big hair was never passé.
I have this thing where I hate it when they take utilitarian features and use them on completely impractical clothing. Like a miniskirt with cargo pockets. Or a flannel shirt the size of a pot-holder. Or a denim-freakin’-blazer. Men’s coat-dress? No duster ever fit that closely.
He looks like he’s homeless and wearing every piece of clothing he owns (and that he apparently dumpster-dives in a hipster neighborhood).

all of the guess ads look like they did in the 90s—why do they even bother making more? And the belly chain? Did I miss the memo that it’s 1996 again? They’re both so attractive people, its a shame they’re put in those clothes. The leather jacket on the the girl is pretty great though, in my opinion. But I love leather jackets.

@Lexington, dear god, do you know my cousins?
That sounds like multiple pictures of them. And unfortunately I can’t disown that I went through my own big hair stage (I think it’s in the Texas blood).
But this picture here isn’t too far a cry from what my hair looked like on Hallowe’en - when I was zombiefied.
I think of these two I would be more scared of the guy’s hair, though; it looks like someone dumped a whole thing of gel in it. Ewww.
