S&M-Inspired Fashion

From the runway to the pages of magazines, fashion is experiencing a resurgence of SM-inspired style. Calvin Klein handcuffs? Check. Whip-wielding models? You bet. Back in the 90s, Versace paved the way with bondage gear that borrowed heavily from the underground fetish scene. Now that kink has gone mainstream, more designers are finding their influences in the SM scene. Last year, Dolce & Gabbana brought the sexy back with crops and padlocked belts. Today, fetish is everywhere.

1. Handcuffs—To promote Secret Obsession, Calvin Klein is sending out samples of their latest perfume with a pair of scented, golden handcuffs. The Pleasurist reports: “I mean, clearly my obsession isn’t going to be so secret anymore.” Just don’t lose the keys to your fetish accessories, or you’ll be stuck wearing them forever.

2. Spikes—Rodarte’s super-spiked stilettos are this season’s must have sh*t-kickers. With funky punk spikes on the straps, toes, and platforms, this fetish footwear can do real damage. Meanwhile, Christopher Bailey’s reinvention of the once staid Burberry brand translates into some pretty meanly mega-spiked cuffs.

3. Lingerie—The poster girl for fetish crossover is Dita Von Teese. Now, she’s launching her own line of underthings with Wonderbra. It’s called Sexy Science by Dita, and it features old school styles from the 40s and 50s that are perfect for girls who fetishize all things retro.

4. Shackles—Possibly the most prevalent trend is shackles. Seen on the runways at Lagerfeld, Lacroix, Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, and Temperley, this is the creme de la kinky trend. Embellished with rings, handles, and jewels, high-end manacles may be intended to curb the spending habits of those who sport them.

5. Goth—Whether it’s Kate Hudson rocking a “Blade Runner"-esque look in Gareth Pugh or Rachel McAdams wearing black lipstick on the cover of T, the Suicide Girls gone glam face has gone Hollywood. Just watch out for black teeth.
