The Ugliest Men In America

TotalBeauty.com looked into a serious matter, gave it the research it deserves, and came up with real answers. They know where the dogs are, and I’m not going to keep you in suspense. The cities with the ugliest men are the following:

8. Houston
7. Philadelphia
6. Detroit
5. Mobile, AL & Huntington, WV (a tie!)
4. Greensboro, NC
3. Miami
2. Hagerstown, MD (I’ve never even heard of this town—and it’s number two!)
1. El Paso, TX

Ambling through their reasoning, you can see they’re paying special attention to education levels (what percentage of the male population has a higher education degree and what percentage dropped out after ninth grade), obesity levels, and teeth. Teeth!

They forgot DC. The education levels might be higher, but they’re all about 4’10 and the manners of trolls. Well…most of them.

hagerstown is right outside of frederick, the third largest town in MD (behind baltimore and rockville)...

they have been trying to market hagerstown as the new suburb of DC, but it’s not really working.  unfortunately, this list is spot-on.

*to be clear, frederick is the third largest, not hagerstown.  i think hagerstown in much further down the list…

I go to school in Frederick, like 30 minutes from Hagerstown.  Totally agree.

Huh. The only guy I know from El Paso, TX, happens to be pretty damned gorgeous, and he’s on his way to being very well-educated (we’re at university).

Anyway, out with the girl in me and in with the budding scientist…:

It’s interesting that they used objective measures to come up with this list, rather than surveying the local women. But then, some of the criteria—like the number of gyms and the sales of contraceptives and erotica—could very well have more to do with the disposable incomes and religious affiliations (in the case of contraceptives) of the residents than their sexiness, and that opens up a whole ‘nother can of worms as to the “what is sexy?” question. Surely being a devout Catholic—thus not using contraception—doesn’t make you ugly? And I know that getting your exercise via playing soccer, instead of going to the gym, doesn’t harm your hotness. wink

Another thing I wonder is, if the statistics they looked at really do point towards low levels of sexy, how much is actually the men’s fault? Even if you do look at the things where you can actually segregate the data about men from the data about women (for instance, rates of obesity among men vs among women in particular area), isn’t it possible that the women there are just as obese, smoke just as much, have just as bad dental health? The results still stand, as far as “If you’re looking for a hot date, don’t start here,” but it’s a little unfair to just say it’s the men that are losers. Then again, the list was done up for a women’s site, and someone might get offended if they posted a list of the 8 cities with the ugliest men and women…

I could probably go on, but I need to go to class. Ha ha.

@ Sabine Hodge: I think you’re absolutely right about Houston. I have only seen a few decent looking guys from all the times I’ve visited. I live in Austin and it does have some MAJOR HOTTIES but it unfortunately has it’s share of the “uglies”.

@dopaminer: It’s a common misconception that Texas is very country, everyone wears cowboy hats/boots, drive big trucks and chew tobacco. Although this is true for some parts of Texas, the rest of us live normal lives, drive regular vehicles, and have all our teeth.

Been to Houston many times over the last 5 years and, sorry to say it since I love TX, never saw a guy that made me want to turn around and chase him. And for some reason, the ones I saw weren’t that tall; I’m 5’7” but when added a couple of inches of heels I was kind of looking down. What’s up with that?!

@Cmunro - the south and the west are neighbors with Texas and the midwest, not with each other - take a road trip and you’ll find that one out FAST =)

I have to say, living in metro Detroit I totally agree that the guys here aren’t all that.  There’s a sort of “slob mentality” and double standard from what I’ve noticed.  The guys want you glammed up like J.Lo but it’s somehow okay for them to walk around in t-shirts and pants down to their ankles, even out for a nice dinner!

Now way!!! Not everybody in Miami is beautiful. I agree there is an abundance of creepy guys down there. I am wondering why Orlando isn’t on the list. I am sure it has to be at least equally ugly as Miami.

Austin is full of irritating metrosexuals.  At least if you take away the gay men in Houston, there are still *some men left*!

As for Houston: Clearly they didn’t visit during rodeo season when the Wrangler butts are out in droves.

I grew up in Hagerstown. I’m actually an attractive, educated male with a BMI in the normal range.

The thing about this city is that there are just as many people living within a mile of the city limits as there are living within the city proper. The more educated and attractive people tend to live just a little outside of the city limits. This could skew the findings.

However, if they actually did consider the entire metropolitan area… then honestly I’m not really surprised that we got this dubious honor and we might deserve it :(

Does not surprise me a bit about ELPTX!  There are so many women that are single over the age of 30 because there are so many men uneducated and heavy. These men want the slim 20 year old and they have a gut as if they are 9 months pregnant.  They can’t handle women who are educated or that they can not control.

That’s why our city is so backwards and never advances.  The city has 80% on welfare and the others live pay check to pay check.  Even with a degree they want to pay you to be “The Jack of all Trades”, yet if you leave the city you get paid for the job you were hired for.  Just because we are a border town the ignorance of our leaders do not improve our town.

Over weight, ugly, uneducated and controling sums up the life style in ELPTX.  How sad, I should have left a long time ago!
