The graph, released by UNICEF and based on data collected between 2001 and 2007, displays the percentages of women, by country, who believe it is OK for their husbands to hit them. The numbers are all horrifying, ranging from 6.9 percent in Serbia to a heartbreaking 90 percent in Jordan. More info here. [via Feministing]

That chart is a terrible representation of the statistics. Why not just make a list and sort them high to low?

@chx8se: DUH! b/c then it wouldn’t be so aesthetically appalling!!! seriously though, when organizations or companies use ‘fancy’ charts like that, it’s not to accurately represent the data—it’s to visually get a point across. graphs (and statistics in general) are easily manipulated to show what the presenter wants.

I don’t think the actual numbers are the point - that’s why they used a graphic instead of a list. The whole point is that there is a statistically measurable number of women who think its OK when their husbands hit them. Plus, if you’re one of the countries with a big slice of pie (so to speak) then maybe you’ll be a shamed a little more.
Overall - I think this is a pretty awesome graphic.

I’d bet good money the percentage of conservative women in the US who think it’s okay for husbands to hit them would be significantly higher than those who are not conservative.
