The Mojito Shoe Takes Minimalist Footwear To New Extremes
“Wait, this is a shoe?” the guys at Gizmodo wonder. Apparently, yes. Created by London-based architect Julian Hakes, the Mojito shoe is barely there footwear for the high-tech minimalist. The heel is made of carbon fiber, which makes it strong and springy; there’s rubber on the bottom, I assume to stop slips, and leather on top, for a bit of cushion. It’s called the “Mojito” because it looks like a lime twist you get in your drink. Of his shoe without a foot plate, Hakes states this is the “most simple, elegant yet poetic expression of the forces at play within the materials used.” Looking at it, I can’t quite imagine wearing it, but I’d like to try it. i don’t understand how it works, wouldn’t your foot be on the ground? slightly unsanitary (@xifeng882 - i agree! i even feel icky walking in manhattan in flip flops!)

@treehugr: Know your toes/foot would be on the flat part and your heal would be up the other end sitting on the little shelf, for lack of better description. So you would wear them like high heeled shoes.

Oh my gosh I want these. I can’t find a price on them, but I’m certain they’re outrageously expensive.

WOW! that lit up both sides of my brain at once! the engineer part said: “DUDE! that’s BRILLIANT!” at the same time the “guy” part said: “FRAK! $my_wife would look HOT in those!!!” :D

Oh my gosh, those are adorable! I would love a pair, and they look like they’d be pretty comfortable, too.

They’d be a definite conversation starter, and for that reason I might consider wearing them to a friend’s party or something like that… but I would NEVER walk down a street in them. Too much dirt and hazardous objects on the ground!

I don’t normally want shoes, but I really want a pair of these. Too bad my feet are probably too wide.

Thanks guys for the post, there are some more images on these links.

The geometry has moved on a little since these images and it is very wearable as it was made over a foot to start with which is why it has a natural geometry.
I wanted to make sure it was designed inside out. Mojito ‘on foot’ images will be uploaded soon.

We have had such a great response thank you. Avail on line shortly(hopefully as things are pretty busy). We are working on both the heel and flat version in different widths for chaps version also. Updates will come straight through our twitter. The link is above.

Hello Julian, I’m back again. Well, I came back to see if you posted a photo of this beautiful shoe on a beautiful foot so we can see how it appears as such. Is this too much to ask? You can design skyscrapers and bridges and now women’s footwear but you’re unable to take a photograph of a foot in a shoe. Seems like a simple request that has been asked of you, repeatedly, from many of your admirers, includ’g myself.
May we see the shoe being worn?
Thank you. I’ll check back in a year; think that’ll be enough time to take a photograph of a foot in a shoe?

Thanks for the message but don’t forget, good things come to those who wait.
Keep you eye on Tyra Banks show as her people asked us to send them info on the mojito shoe story. Tyra may become the first person to wear the final design. Also Forbes are running a feature in Feb on our work and the link with our architecture and fashion.
We have lots of prototypes in the studio now and we are in discussion with some major players in the shoe world to scale up manufacture and distribution in time for a formal launch.
We will keep you posted via http://www.twitter.com/julianhakes
All the best for 2010 and kind regards
Julian
