The History Of The Muff

evolution of the muff card

One of the reasons people are obsessed with hair is because it’s something you can instantly change and it always grows back (barring unfortunate baldness issues). When it comes to the vagine, we’ve been less than enthusiastic about following trends and changing it up, yet remain hopelessly obsessed. This poster by shopA is called “Evolution of the Muff.” Think you can guess what’s in store for the nether regions today? See the whole poster after the jump! [$25, shopA, SupermarketHq.com]

A friend of mine’s dad has a ton of old Playboys that spans about twenty years or so. Ever since I found out about/saw them I’ve wanted to sit down and look at all of the centerfolds and cover girls to see how pubic hair styles have evolved.

It makes me wish that I was in high school again. It would have been a bitchin’ history project.

I wonder how long it will take for the style cycle to go full-circle….

I’m one of the very few people I know that doesn’t shave/wax down there, EVER. My sisters do it all year ‘round, even during *winter* when they’ll never even touch a bathing suit. Needless to say, I’m not a fan of the trend. Who wants to go back to pre-pubescence? Any guy who would prefer my vajayjay look like that of a twelve-year-old probably has a few issues.

@ThatWeirdGamerChick: Not too go all TMI on you (What am I saying? This is the Frisky for Christ sake! LOL) but I am completely bald down there. I shave daily year-round, but I didn’t start until I was about 17. I didn’t feel the need to do it and my bf at the time seemed OK with my hair.  A friend of mine urged me to try it and I was sold. It feels so much cleaner to me ... now any kind of hair there would feel so gross and untidy. My husband said he never saw a girl that had hair there ever and the thought would kind of freak him out ... he compared it to not straightening the house before company comes over. LOL So, if you ever have the desire to try some hair removal, you won’t regret it. Trust me.

Grooming is not necessarily about swimsuits. I know I prefer not to go down on a mouthful of wild, untamed hair so I imagine my partner doesn’t really want to either.

@EarthGoddess I have tried it before when I was younger, and it’s really just not for me. I’m kind of a total hippy, so I go for the “natural body” idea. And experiencing (TMI ALERT!) stubble in certain places, and the discomfort of both shaving or waxing, just doesn’t feel right for me. Besides, it’s a lot of upkeep and it’s not like anyone’s going to see what’s going on down there. I don’t go swimming and currently am not at risk for any “action” smile

LOL ThatWeirdGamerChick! To each her own ... I’m definitely not a hippy chick, and fall more into the total girlie girl category. So, I guess our personal beauty rituals are very different. smile

@earthgoddess—no harm meant but your husband has never saw a girl with hair down there?? Now that kind of freaks me out. Maybe im from the wrong era but i don’t remember seeing girls without it until the mid to late 1990’s.

To each her own when it comes to pubic hair. The most feminist thing you can do is whatever the hell you feel like it right for you.

I just resent arguments that shaving bare makes you look pre-pubescent or that guys that like shaved lady bits are somehow pedophiles.

Adult genitalia look very different from a child’s, hair or no. If I have sex with a guy who has a little dick does that mean I want to sleep with little boys? Absolutely not.

Personally, I shave bare because it feels nicer when I go running and it makes it a little easier during oral. Sometimes I grow a patch or a racing stripe if I feel like it.

It’s just hair; it’ll grow.

I like to keep the bushes trimmed enough so the boyfriend can see the front door. And I’m not exactly talking about my house.

@bogart4017: My husband is 33, so he wasn’t looking at lady parts in person until the early to mid-1990s. I think being bare there was pretty commonplace by then.

@metricula: I agree with you and resent the pre-pubescent and pedophilia comments, too.

Funny…I see a guy who prefers the hair.  Makes it easier for me.

I used to be bald, but I started dating someone who liked hair.  I grew it out just for a change.  Now I’m dating someone who hates hair.  I’m not changing it.  It’s just hair… men really should NOT have strong opinions about this.

My wife and I have differing views of a woman’s pubic hair. She began shaving 2 years ago leaving some hair above and around the labia.

She recently shaved it completely off. She loves it and says it makes her feel sexy and smooth, and she likes sex even better.

I, on the other hand find a woman’s pubic hair to be her treasure chest…..the “mark” of womanhood. That first glimpse of a woman’s bush is alluring….as if to conceal her vagina. The excitement of finally being able to see what is beneath makes for a tremendously exciting experience. The sight of her bush is an “instant erection” for me.

I have tried to make my wife understand how I feel, but she is resistant to change because she likes how it makes her feel. Seeing her bald just doesn’t do much for me. The issue has created some problems for us. I am 51, and she is 47. I grew up in the days when all a woman did was trim. Therefore, I have always loved the sight of a woman’s bush.

The porn industry in the 80s started the shaving trend. Today, waxing is the popular thing. I continue to hope that the styling trends will change and come full circle back to the more natural look. Although I sincerely doubt it is going to happen because salons make their money on the waxing/shaving trend.

I would give anything to see my wife once again the way she was the first 27 years I knew her. But for now…she wins, and I lose.
