The First Lady’s Feet Are Put To The Test ... What’s Your Pain Threshold For Heels?

michelle obama

Last night the Obamas hosted a dinner for the G20 summit, and, naturally, Michelle was expertly styled. Reports The New York Times:

“Mrs. Obama [wore] a taupe, pink and green patterned cocktail dress with straps. Pink patent leather two-inch heels. Hair pulled back in a full, bouffant faux-ponytail. Long pearl necklace, pearl earrings. No stockings.”

Aside from the fact that Michelle Obama hasn’t fully transitioned to her fall wardrobe (no tights!), we were more struck by her shoes ...

According to the Times, the First Lady and her husband spent two hours just greeting attendees. Meaning, that was only the beginning of her evening. Sure, there’s a huge difference between traipsing around in sky-high pumps and two-inch heels, but still ... spending a couple hours standing in any high heel can’t be comfortable. Either Mobama has some amazingly comfortable shoes, or she’s hiding some super-human powers (we wouldn’t be surprised if the latter were true).

Earlier this week we wondered, are heels even worth the pain? Now we’re concerned with stamina. How long can you last in a pair of pumps before your feet beg for relief? [NY Times]

I am known just as well for my lack of wearing shoes as I am for my fabulous shoes, and this was a thing that I began at a very young age. SO to answer your question, I dont last too long.

I vote for the super-human powers option! And the First Lady hasn’t fully transitioned her wardrobe to fall because fall is ignoring Washington right now - it was 85 here yesterday, and fairly disgustingly muggy. My sweaters, boots and tights are pouting in my closet.

It depends on the pair.  Uncomfortable pair 2 hours max.  Comfortable pair I can go all day and night.  Used to wear them to work (did not do the flats to heels to flats change)—walking to bus stop, standing while waiting for bus, standing while waiting for subway, standing on subway, walking 4 blocks to work and the reverse to go home—then all day at work mostly standing and walking on marble floors and up and down stairs.  Then while running errands at night before going home.  12 hours+  BUT, that said…it HAS TO BE THE RIGHT PAIR.  Can’t do that in just any old pair of heels.

I lasted about 7 hours standing and sitting intermittently at the prom in 4 1/2 inch heels. I rock! hehe

i think as long as they are comfortable and you arent doing a lot of walking, standing shouldnt really be an issue. i think 2 inches is definitely the way to go. 3 if i’m feeling daring.

I last about the time it takes me to do my hair…then I change into flats before I leave. Who am I kidding?

well, last night i stood the entire time while helping with a music event at my work, and it was around 5 hours.. yeah, my feet were killing me after and relieved when i went home, but it was terrible for me.. and i think they were around 2-3inches? not sure..

and exactly what jessalyn said. Washington has decided not to move onto fall yet. It is about a month late for us. wtf. i was so ready to wear my boots 2 weeks ago. Tuesday (being the beginning of rain and cold) can not come any faster.

last night for about five hours in 5 inch heels.  my coworker who is around my size tried them on and called them torture but i found them comfortable.  yes, by feet were not by the time i took them off but i could have kept going, i just wanted to be able to really dance and that wasn’t a safe option in those heels after a few drinks.
