The Best News Ever: Red Wine Makes Women Thin!

For a wino wine lover like me, I just received the best news I could possibly hear. A new, long-term study says that women who drink red wine in moderation stay thinner into middle age. Woo hoo! So I finally have a legit reason to pop the cork on a daily basis. Of the 20,000 women that participated in this study, the red wine drinkers consistently put on less weight than the women who drank white wine, beer, liquor, or no alcohol at all. Why? The theory is that the body processes calories from alcohol differently from calories from food. The livers of regular red wine drinkers develop a separate method of breaking down alcohol, where surplus energy is turned into heat rather than fat. So those calories from your glass of Pinot Noir will get burned off while the calories from your slice of pizza will go directly to your butt. If you weren’t already excited to go out and buy a bottle of liquid dinner, studies also show that red wine can prevent blood clots and heart disease and extend your life expectancy. Cheers to that! Fancy. If only wine didn't taste like church to me. I'll keep my spirits high and hope that science finds rum to be the next miracle cure-all...a girl can dream.

...And we're sure that the kind of women who favor red wine over beer or hard alcohol aren't simply the kind of women who also tend to steer clear of the middle-aged spare tire? Like, wealthier women who can afford gym memberships and who care about fitting into designer jeans that are hard to find in sizes above 12? Red wine seems more associated with healthier lifestyles than beer and liquor to begin with, anyway...I hope the study was done by randomly assigning the subjects to different groups, rather than, like, surveying them at age 30 and again at 45 and see whether the ones who identified themselves as wine drinkers gained more weight. ...I just glanced at the Daily Mail article. It was a survey. I do not trust.

I think this study has some merit. In the past, I would drink cocktails, e.g., vodka and cranberry, or vodka and tonic. About a year and a half ago I switched to red wine and the occasional beer. I'm about 20 pounds lighter now. I'm sure there's other things I could attribute the weight loss to, but overall, my lifestyle has not changed that drastically.

I think it's also partly because wine lacks the carbs of beer and the sugars of cocktails.

Interesting, I know a lot of overweight people that love red wine on a daily basis. Almost as many as skinny people that love beer/cocktails.It is funny how repeating something for so long will make people believe it. Red wine is so healthy. Red wine is great for you. Red wine is good for the heart.

@SCRMOM - Not at all. People have been beating the red wine health benefits drum for a while now, more or less as an excuse to drink. Just drink if you want to, stop explaining to everyone that you do it for the health reasons. It isn't any better for you than real grape juice and taking baby aspirin.
