The Battle Of Harry, Ron, And Their Phallic Broomsticks

Harry Potter Posters

What’s going on with the phallic imagery in these Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince posters? Young adult novelist Meg Cabot points out on her blog that there’s something strange, and clearly, um, preferential going on with Ron Weasley’s manly broomstick. Placed side-by-side, you see Ron’s thick and long broom pointing upwards, while Harry’s much smaller wand points down.

“Is this Daniel Radcliffe’s punishment because we’ve all seen him with his clothes off on YouTube?” questions Cabot hilariously. Maybe Warner Bros. execs have some secret plan for turning sidekick Ron into a teen hunk (he must feel pretty lousy, after all, when he’s got not only Daniel to contend with but also co-star Emma Watson, the world’s new It Girl). Cabot sure has a point about Ron’s beefy outfit and powerful stance: “If you were a teenaged girl, who would you rather go out with,” Cabot puts it simply. [MegCabot.com]

or maybe they’ve, oh, I don’t know - read the book?  seen the final cut?  I won’t toss any spoilers so I’ll just say there are plenty of plausible/benign explanations for this in the context of the plot…

if you’re going to do a story on the this I’d focus on the rumors that the movie’s going to be a teenage hormone fest instead of focusing on the core plot of the book which is the Riddle/Voldemort back story - got a bad feeling I’m going to be one of those “THEY RUINED THE BOOK!!!”-types on this one (FWIW this was my favorite of the series)...

Reading the book does help a lot in understanding these posters. And Ron is a hot piece, so why not let him have his moment?

@40yrolddad : As I recall, the sixth book was a hormone fest. Ginny had a new boyfriend every chapter, there was a love triangle, there were the potion-induced teenage girls that went on for more than one chapter…

Sure, the Tom Riddle to Voldemort transformation was there and it was important, but people can’t pretend that there wasn’t a ton of making out in book six.

Rupert hardly gets any press, Dan and Emma seems to get all the spotlight while he just hangs around in the back. Let him have his spotlight raspberry I am so excited for this movie.  I have to read the books again though.

Rupert is a but-his-face, honestly. Frankly, I’m just annoyed because while I’d love to see the ever-scrumptious Tom Felton/Draco Malfoy on many, many t-shirts, the only one I have found is the group one :(

Plus, everyone already knows how BA Harry is - I mean, he saves the world! Often! Ron just needs a little self-esteem boost.

Ginger - I’m not pretending there wasn’t, just that who Voldemort IS, why he’s the way he is (not that it excuses it) & horcruxes/how to stop/kill him are just a TAD bit more important to the arc across the series than who Ron, Ginny, Hermione and/or Harry are “snogging” in a given chapter of this book - I guess I should just be thankful they left SPEW out of the Goblet & Phoenix movies though… wink

@ Katrina

They don’t have enough variety in harry potter merchandise :( it makes me sad. The only place were I can even find a HP shirt is hot topic or look around online for fan-made shirts.

Reading the books has nothing to do with understanding these posters, other than the fact that Ron plays Quidditch.  That said, I didn’t even notice the Phallic stuff before, and I’ve seen these things floor to ceiling high, looming down on me in all their mis-placed bad-assery. Still, I laugh out loud every time I see them because a) wow did they beef up the quidditch uniforms for this movie, and b) no matter how dark and grown up the books get, I just never saw any of the characters as particularly bad-ass.  I can’t wait to see it!

Oh SPEW. Not quite important.

I want to see them bring up the locket though. That all important locket that, for some reason, JK Rowling thought was less important than telling the script writers that Dumbledore was gay.

my worst fears have been confirmed!  a coworker told me he saw an interview w/the director who said it’s going to be “a romantic comedy”...  _W_! _T_! _F_!!!  has this guy even READ the other books (or this one for that matter?)?  again, no spoilers (though I think it’s common knowledge what happens at the end of this one), but for those who haven’t read it but are going to see the movie the REAL central plot is SUPPOSED to be Dumbledore teaching Harry about Riddle/Voldemort’s past (going back a couple of generations) and learning the secret to possibly PERMANENTLY defeating him.  yes, there’s some 90210 subplots but the emphasis is on _SUB_!!!  they’re totally going to RUIN the best book of the seven!!! </rant>

and as for “Reading the books has nothing to do with understanding these posters” unfortunately I can’t rebut this insightful statement w/o dropping spoilers but suffice to say there are VERY specific & obvious reasons Ron’s pictured the way he is & same for Harry…

HA, oh please.  I have read book 6 multiple times, it’s my favorite as well, and I cannot think of a single plot spoiler that would somehow illuminate these posters.  They are just posters of the characters looking all serious and bad-ass.  Unless you are talking about the part where they reveal the size of the main characters’ penises (woops! sorry for spoiling it!)
But thanks for calling my comment “insightful.”  It was totally meant to be, because God knows this was meant to be a deep and insightful post and not just a fun blurb.  Oh…wait…

I have been a Harry Potter fan for about ten years now.  I have read my way through the series more times than I can count.  My copies are falling apart from overuse.  I DESPISE the movie franchise.  I think the acting is weak, the story lines way too condensed… I just can’t stand them.  That being said, Book 6 was one of my favourites and I’m excited to see how they put it all together.
