The Anti-Bachelorette Party
Let’s face it: bachelorette parties can be pretty lame. From the penis straws and cheap veil the bride-to-be dons, to the throngs of drunk, squealing girls clogging trendy barroom doorways, I’ve always been turned off by the typical modern-day bachelorette party. And since I got engaged a few months ago, I assumed it was a tradition I’d happily avoid. After all, the majority of my closest friends live in Chicago where I lived before moving to New York to be with my long-distance boyfriend. I didn’t expect them to come all the way here to party it up with me when they’re already coming in for the wedding. And while I’ve made some new friends here, I don’t yet have the kind of “tribe” I had in Chicago — not yet, anyway. So as my fiance’s been planning a bachelor party, I’ve been resigned to not having anything at all.
But then I went to Chicago for the weekend to visit friends and escape the stress of wedding planning for a few days (the big day’s just five weeks away!) and while I was there my friends threw me a surprise bachelorette party. Turns out those things don’t have to be so lame after all! Everyone gathered along the Chicago lakefront, one of my favorite places ever, where we spent the whole afternoon eating great food, drinking champagne and vodka lemonade, enjoying each other’s company, and celebrating my transition into a new chapter of life — all without a single penis product. It was the perfect way to make me feel loved and supported, which is the whole point of a bachelorette party, isn’t it? In an effort to save other brides-to-be the indignity of a cheesy affair, what are some of your favorite bachelorette party ideas?

Now if only we could get men to get rid of all the strippers and stop thinking of their bachelor party as their “last night of freedom.” That’d be nice.

Mine was pretty fun and low key hopping around NYC. Everyone was casually dressed. There were no wigs, no sashes, no tiaras.
We started out with dinner at a cool restaurant where we drank some seriously good sangria. Then we took a tour of the Museum of Sex, learning about all the various fetishes, history of sex toys and watching fun video featurettes.
Afterwards, we headed to this club where we watched an old school vaudeville burlesque show that was out of this world. There were dancers, the guinness record sword swallower, fire eaters, flame thrower on a unicycle, comedians and a rocking band. Afterwards, we hung by the bar for drinks and headed home. Our “I heart porn” buttons from the museum scored us all a free train ride home.
There was no public humiliation, no attention-seeking costumes, no debauchery. Everyone had a blast.

For a good friend of mine who hates being the center of attention, we had a dual bachelorette and bachelor party—her fiance graciously came out to dinner with a small group of us girls (he’s been married and done the traditional bachelor thing before) and then we went back to the bride’s brother’s house where friends of both parties were waiting for drinks and a bonfire—low-key, it allowed everyone to mingle, and it was befitting both of their personalities—and waaayyy more fun and economically friendly than bar-hopping or hiring strippers!

I just threw a bachelorette party that consisted of going to a spa, getting massages, and then going out for crepes. It was pretty freaking sweet.

girlfriend of mine wanted something non-falic; so i found a fun restaurant & we went to a comedy club. afterwards; the two parties joined together & we all hung up at the future newlyweds home until the sun came up. and rather than beads or tiaras; i found some embarrassing and/or fun pictures of all of the women at the party & made buttons for us to wear.

I’m planning to do a winery tour for one of my friends next year. We can rent a limo and have it take us around to different wineries then go out to a nice dinner.
