Teen Text Walks, Falls Into A Manhole
A 15-year-old New York girl found out that walking and texting can be just as dangerous as driving while texting. Alexa Longueira was strolling down the street and paying more attention to sending a message than the sidewalk, when she plunged feet first into an uncovered manhole. “It was four or five feet, it was very painful. I kind of crawled out and the DEP guys came running and helped me,” Longueira told her local newspaper. “They were just, like, ‘I’m sorry! I’m sorry!’” Besides suffering through the serious sewage stench, Longueira also got scrapes on her arms and back. After making sure the teen was okay, her family plans to get back at city workers who left the manhole uncovered the old fashioned way: a lawsuit. Ever had your own text walking accident? I don’t need to be texting to do something like that. I’m unbelievably clumsy. I’ve been known to trip over blades of grass. So I don’t text & walk. For me, it would probably lead to fatal injuries!

Sidewalks get me..I just can’t help but fall off of them. They’re tricky things, those sidewalks. That being said, I don’t think the city should be held liable. Had she been paying attention to where she was going, this wouldn’t have happened. If I was this teen’s parent, I would let it serve as lesson.

I read this in the news this morning and burst out laughing. It’s like something on a cartoon.
Also - read the article. “The family said they will file a lawsuit—for what, though, is not immediately clear.”
This is what pisses me off about this country - we have engulfed ourselves in an arrogant sense of self-entitlement. The world automatically owes us something if our life doesn’t go according to plan. The girl was a dumbass and fell into a hole while texting - lesson learned. Don’t sue the city for your daughter’s retardedness. I really feel frivolous lawsuits should be a capital crime.

SO stupid. Yes, please sue the city because your daughter isn’t smart enough to look where she’s going. I hope this girl never drives.

@ tattooed_redhead: That’s me in a nut shell! I’m so clumsy as well. And if I’m texting I make a point of standing still. Hehe.

@joyy
would you blame a blind person for her blindness had that person fallen into the open manhole?
of course this will teach the teen a safety lesson
when i was working as an au pair in London, i even managed one night to fall into the manhole i had actually been looking at from a long distance, and, i dont know how or why, had forgotten about it by the time i reached it, and of course, fell in it….
i have the memory of a gold fish….

@nicefrenchgurl - most blind people don’t walk around unaware of their surroundings, canes and dogs help them detect where, say, giant holes in the street and intersections are. This girl couldn’t be bothered to LOOK WHERE SHE WAS GOING even though she did have eyes. Being a moron is not an excuse for suing the city.

err, even though she wasn’t blind and was fully capable of seeing. blind people have eyes too.

How often were we told as kids to look where we are going? You know how often i see it? Brooklyn is the worst for this. Who walks east looking west??
