Is Target The New Barnes And Noble?

Target is turning many books from flops into best-sellers. Each month, a panel of employees gets together and chooses some books, often from little-known authors, to be a Target “Bookmarked Club Pick.” The books that are chosen are published in special Target editions, and the prices are slashed. The books are put on the ends of bookshelves so shoppers will notice them more. Turns out, Target is quite the trendsetter. People have begun snatching up their picks, some of which are books that, previously, no one gave a damn about. Check out some of their picks, after the jump.

  • The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton
  • Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay
  • The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes by Diane Chamberlain
  • Still Alice by Lisa Genova
  • The Year of Fog by Michelle Richmond
  • Come Back by Claire and Mia Fontaine

Have you heard of any of these suckers? [NY Times]

Anyone read any of these?  I’m in a bookclub and am always looking for a good read; however, these sound very Lifetime Movie, which isn’t my style.

Someone I know has a book coming out next month and it was specifically published by the publishing house as a Target/Wal-Mart special release.  It will be interesting to see if she gets the end of the aisle, though.

I haven’t read “Year of Fog,” but I read another book by Michelle Raymond (“No One You Know”) and was pleasantly surprised by the quality.

Actually, I have found myself buying books at Target just because it is convenient and relatively inexpensive for new books. Although, I just purchased a few books from Amazon for pretty inexpensive too. And Barnes & Noble is having an amazing summer sale at which I found 9 great (according to reviews, and I can vouch for 2 so far) books for $50.
