Putting A Lid On It: Tape Gives Women Eyes Creases

Koji Technical Eye Tape Is Used By Women Who Want More Crease In Their Eye Lids

Most of us have some body hangup, whether we hate our hair (“Too curly!” “Too straight!”) or bodies (“My boobs are too small!” “My boobs are too big!”). For many Asian women, it’s the lack of an eye crease — some Asians don’t have defined indentations above their eye, which is called a “double eyelid.” The trouble, women claim, is that this “single eyelid” look makes them appear tired or mad.

Eye surgery is a very popular procedure, but now the Japanese have created a product to fix this “problem,” at least temporarily: Koji Technical Eye Tape. The tape can be applied on top of makeup in the morning to create this coveted “deep lid” look. While it sounds wacky, it’s probably not any weirder than other things we do in the name of beauty. And it’s a lot less dramatic than going under the knife. What do you think? [Koji Technical Eye Tape, Amazon]

I think this tape thing is a complicated mix of racial and beauty issues.  It’s not so much the desire to meet society’s idea of beautiful, but the desire to be beautiful specifically by western standards, which means having eye creases.  Racialicious has a few good articles about it, here’s one:  http://www.racialicious.com/2008/12/22/assimilated-beauty/

Girls have been using Scotch tape to do this for a long time, and I’d be surprised if they’ve just gotten around to making a commercial product for it… it’s probably been around for a while. Anyway, I’m half Asian and have a crease above one eye but not the other, so I always want to tell people like this to stuff it… at least their eyes match! This is also pretty roundly condemned in the Asian American community, mainly for the reasons Sonic pointed out.

I’ve had so many friends that do this on a daily basis, it scares me 0.0

wow. I had no idea any products like this were around at all. I looked on youtube and apparently there is such thing as eyelid glue to achieve the same effect. the how-to video I watched was creepy though - eyeballs gross me out, and there was a lot of eyeball in that video. When she used the little pusher thing to create the crease, her eyelid went WAY back and made her look like a crazy person

*shudder*

When I was 14 and doing the Glamour Pics thing in China, the photographer’s assistant cut strips of surgical tape to put on my eyelids for the same purpose. I already have “double eyelids,” wtf? I agree with Sonic - this is a mix of race and beauty issues, it’s like the twin sister of the pale-is-beautiful aesthetic that is popular in Asia.
