Swedes Can Now Let It All Hang Out Legally

topless woman sunbathing

What your mother always told you: if you got it, flaunt it. In the U.S., that’s not so easy when “going around topless” translates to “indecent exposure.” Now, ladies in Malmö, Sweden have won the right to swim and sunbathe topless at the city’s pools. The issue was pushed by a feminist organization called Bara Bröst (translation: “bare breasts”), which gained publicity back in 2007 when two young girls were prohibited from swimming topless, one of whom explained her motive: “It’s a question of equality. I think it’s a problem that women are sexualized in this way. If women are forced to wear a top, shouldn’t men also have to?” (Amen, sister.) The city’s committee just put into action an egalitarian motion that wins the case for women, but only in a matter of wording, stipulating that everyone has to wear a bathing suit at a Malmö pool, but not insisting that a bathing suit for a female need include a top.

While nude tanning is much more a European thing, we have to ask if this measure should be extended to the United States. What do you think? Should you be able to go sans-top without trouble on a beach? Or are Americans just too pervy to deal with a half-naked lady with an adult attitude, and not adult manner?  [Thelocal.se]

Remember the nip slip(Timberlake and Jackson)during the halftime show at the superbowl a few years ago?  The ridiculously over-the-top fallout from that?  Yeah, Americans aren’t ready for topless sunbathing.

The only way to force Americans to grow up is to force them to deal with stuff like this.  If sunbathing topless becomes the norm, maybe people won’t be surprised by it (which will help when people go abroad).

Going topless is legal in Ontario! But there aren’t many women who take advantage of it. Myself included.

While there are some limited nude/clothing optional beaches in the US I think it would be wonderful if all beaches went topless. I think that the reason Americans are so “pervy” is that boobs have been put on a closeted pedestal. By covering up society makes boobs a taboo. And I’m not saying there won’t be pervs or that boobs will be come de-sexualized or no big deal, I just think they’d be less of a big deal if topless beaches were mainstream. Maybe it would bring joy to many a pubescent boy, but it could also help young beach or pool going girls and boys get a dose of reality, considering the only real nude women they see are celebrities (in movies) or porno. And without a personal trainer, personal chef and plastic surgery do women look like that.
