Stand By Your Man…Barf!
Thanks to Feministing for reminding us to mention something that’s been hardcore bugging us about this whole Eliot Spitzer scandal. Why do the wives of these politicians have to get up on stage with them while they confess their sins to the public? Chances are they probably just found out the truth themselves and instead of getting to behave like normal betrayed women (whether that means crying, screaming, breaking glasses, plotting revenge, decapitation, or all of the above), they have to do the whole “stand by your man” thing. So unfair! Is that the price you have to pay as the wife of a public official? Can’t these ladies at least chill in the green room scowling and clutching a glass of bourbon, their dignity intact? It’s such a bummer to have to play supportive wife to these cheating scoundrels. Anyway, this is indeed a good excuse for a lil’ Tammy Wynette. Enjoy!

For the record, I do totally love this song.

Jim McGreevey’s ex-wife wrote a column about this for today’s NY Times.

She says (about standing by McGreevey during the press conference, etc.), “Frankly, all I was thinking about was my daughter. If I had to do it over again, I’d do the same thing. I did it for my daughter’s father.”
This, somehow, shows what a difference there can be between men and women. Not to hate on men here, but during a time of crisis women seem more likely to be strong for everyone else and then suffer alone later.

I would like to believe they are standing up for themselves not their husbands when they are sharing the stage. At least that is what I want to believe!

I think it’s mortifying to see them standing by their creepy men.

Any woman with an ounce of dignity would not support her man in this type of situation. I don’t know if they do it because they stand to lose their way of life or because they actually love their husbands. I’m sorry, but cheating on your wife with a prostitute is disgusting and unforgivable. I could almost see why a woman would forgive a man who cheated, but with a prostitute?! No freaking way.

As a married gal, I gotta say, I understand the whole “supporting your husband in a time of need” concept (as MY husband reminded me). But honestly, this seems like a matter better left to private discussion and support. I see no reason why these women feel compelled to stand up and play the fool. I say, let the guys pay the price publicly, while these women get a chance to figure out what they want to do to next.
