Sorry, Meghan McCain, But You Don't Get An Award For Not Being A Bigot

Following Meghan McCain‘s tweets has always been a strange endeavor. Under the Twitter handle mccainbloggette, Sen. John McCain’s 24-year-old daughter is as likely to tweet “God bless the troops!” as she is “Off to Perez Hilton’s party!” She doesn’t tackle many tricky political issues, but follow her Twitter feed and read her columns for The Daily Beast and it’s clear there is one social issue dear to her heart: gay rights. The girl’s a Grade-A fag hag—there’s no question about it. Just read how aflutter she got this weekend, tweeting while thousands of people marched in Washington, D.C. for marriage equality.

In an interview with the blog Politico, Meghan said, “All I am trying to be is a young, cool Republican woman for other Republican women.” And it’s true. Some say Meghan McCain is a new leader for the Republican Party, a younger, fresher voice for those who are politically conservative who also happens to be with it, modern, and for gay rights. As she said in a speech for the Log Cabin Republicans, a group of gay conservatives:

“I am concerned about the environment. I love to wear black. I think government is best when it stays out of people’s lives and business as much as possible. I love punk rock. I believe in a strong national defense. I have a tattoo. I believe government should always be efficient and accountable. I have lots of gay friends. And yes, I am a Republican.”

This tattooed, punk rock-loving, gay-rights-embracing gal challenges the mold of what it means to be a Republican: I get it. And I honestly do think it’s cool when Meghan uses her famous last name to do things like pose for the No H8 Campaign, which protested California’s Proposition 8, a ban on same-sex marriage. It’s also nice how when she blogs about gay rights issues, like in her most recent column about why President Obama must repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in the military, she’s on the side of justice.

But it all makes you nauseous after awhile—I mean, Meghan McCain is hardly the first person, or the first conservative, to call for equal rights for gays. It’s great to be an ally, sure, but it’s also not very respectful to go on and on about how you’re so “cool” because you’ve got gay friends. Regardless of the fact that our country is f**ked up about gay rights, not being a bigot isn’t something that straight people—or straight conservatives for that matter—should celebrate. Her “conservative who supports gay rights” shtick gets nauseating for the millions of people who are supportive of gay rights without any fanfare.

Meghan very well may be a good role model for young conservatives in other realms, but she’s a bit mistaken on how “cool” she must be for having the radical idea that gay people are human beings, too. Seriously, Meghan, just because you’re conservative and not bigoted against gays doesn’t mean you deserve an award.

I agree that she probably doesn’t deserve a medal. However, speaking as a lesbian woman, we really do need more straight people that are supportive of gay rights to make a fanfare. We’re trying to get laws passed and have rights and privileges acknowledged. So from the other side, her fanfare is appreciated.

P.S. The use of “fag hag” is not appreciated. Doesn’t really work on a public level for gay people. OK?

Yeah I get what you’re saying but it was probably a little harder for her to not cave to her paps pressure to make like a duckling and follow quietly and passively in his foot steps. And she could have easily done just that but she used her voice and her status to call attention to an issue she believes in, every person counts and every voice matters.

The GLBT community doesn’t need more support from “Straight” people. They need people to take their heads out of their religious rear ends and realize that there is supposed to be a separation between church and state and that this is a choice that people make, just as it is some people choice to live a “straight” life. and the very laws that allow them to believe what they want religiously allow for people to live lifestyles different then their own beliefs. It’s not a one way street. you want your mega-churches and your bible thumping to be legal? then same sex marriage should be legal to. its a RIGHT. why can’t people see that? are they so blinded by religion that they can’t see past they’re own “perfect” existence? I ams sure that there has never been a right wing republican that has ever veered off the straight and narrow. No conservative individual who has cheated on a spouse, a test, done drugs (pot counts).

Wake up and smell the equality. It’s your CHOICE to be a conservative and believe what you believe in. if you want that CHOICE you have to be willing to let other people make their own CHOICES. whether you believe in it or not.

The only problem is that right now the LGBT rights movement needs people to make fanfare, especially conservative fanfare. Or straight people standing up and saying you know what this isn’t right. There is still a long way to go before LGBT Americans are treated the same under the law as heterosexual Americans. I’m not gonna get on anyone’s case for adding their voice to the chorus calling for equal rights for the LGBT community.

@ Timeguy55: Really? I don’t think the LGBT community is at a juncture that they can turn away “straight” allies. When you isolate yourself, things don’t get done.  When you talk about civil rights you have to have an open-door policy, so I disagree with your statement.

The point is that no one whether they are gay, straight, or purple and red, should get lauded for believing in what is right and civil rights for all people is what is right, so who cares what her political views are, she should be in support of gay rights because equality is what we all should believe in. And really being a conservative and being a religious zealot, at one time where two different things, but somewhere along the line they merged and formed this right-winged hellhole ideology.  Being conservative means you want as little government intrusion into your personal life as possible, so really true conservatives should be against something like DOMA, because what is more of an intrusion then legislation than regulates who you can love, and leaves it up to the state to tell you whether your marriage is valid or not.

@Timeguy55: Not all people who are against gay marriage are religious, and not all religious people are against gay marriage.

I say that the more people, (gay, straight, bi, asexual, ect) who enthusiastically speak out for gay rights, the better. I don’t even care if she commits a bit of self-aggrandizing now and then, at least she is willing to say to anyone who will listen that gay rights are the same thing as human rights.

Does being able to say you’ve supported something longer than someone else add some extra points somewhere?

She harps on GLBT equality to further a political career, what an insidious plan!  Who knows what kind of evil can come from an increased awareness regarding the issues?  Progress might even be made!  Oh foul wench Meghan!

Uh, “fag-hag?”  Well, I wasn’t aware that being in favor of equal rights was going by that title….  I’ll have to update my picket signs. :/

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather hear Meghan McCain go on about her values than Sarah Palin.  Besides, it’s not like anyone’s forced to follow her Twitter feed or Facebook page or whatever.  If you don’t like it, stop tuning in.  Honestly, I’d forgotten that she even existed until I read this article.
