Slideshow: Sarah Palin & Other Tanorexic Stars
When I heard that VP-nominee Sarah Palin installed a tanning bed in the Governor’s Mansion in Alaska, I was simultaneously amused and appalled. But Palin isn’t alone. There are tons of celebrities who are STILL fans of visiting the tanning salon despite all the research which shows how dangerous the practice is—of course, some of them do indulge in the much safer spray-tanning craze, as well. Either way, the color their skin turns is hardly what you’d consider…flattering or particularly natural and healthy-looking. Check out the color samples above—those are the actual skin colors of celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, and Paris Hilton—with the imaginary names I’d give them if they actually bottled it in fake tanner formula. Check out all the celebrities with an obsession for having a bronze glow, after the jump…
Back in the day, when I was a college student in California, I was a total tanorexic. My friend worked at a tanning salon and got me completely addicted to weekend fake-n-bake sessions with nothing but Beach Bum Rum tanning lotion to protect my virgin skin from harmful UV-rays. I’ve since learned my lesson about tanning (at least in a coffin-like contraption) and so has Palin’s running mate, John McCain. He suffered from skin cancer in 1993 and again in 2000 and has since become an avid supporter of using a high-SPF sunscreen. Perhaps he should have a sit down with Palin before the subject comes up at one of the forthcoming debates.

It keeps getting reported as a tanning bed, but that’s incorrect. It was a SAD light. As a former Alaska resident myself, those things are a godsend.

Once, in a magazine, I read that fans thought that Eva Mendez used too much tanner/tanned too much.
Guess they didn’t get the memo that she’s Cuban (and frankly close to my color- I’m a brown Cuban myself).

It is sad when politicians make headlines not on how good their policies might be but on what beauty products they use. Who cares? I mean would you not vote for her if she had great policies, but also owned a sun bed?

I understand that tanning is not healthy, but I think the only celebs in this slideshow that look unnatural are Christina and Pamela. Whether they are achieving the look from tanning or spray tanning, does it really matter what color they prefer? A tan really is flattering on a lot of people.

What Par3 said about a surge of energy is true. I’m a mom with 4 kids, I work full time and have Fibromyalgia. Tanning makes me feel better. It releases seratonin a natural chemical in the brain that makes us feel better mentally and gives us more energy. Although repeated tanning is proving to cause skin cancer, an occasional 10 minutes in a tanning bed makes me a better, happier and functioning mom. Go Gov. Palin -running the state of Alaska, with five children, dealing with a pregnant teenager and now the relentless one sided attack of the press and media. The tanning bed is probably the only place where you can take 10 by yourself.

Tell the press to pick on the candidate who doesn’t have as much experience or qualifications and wasn’t even born in the USA.The best Vice President would be Palin. as she has more qualifications. and ability.

These comments above and the hoopla over Palin tells us what a superficial and moronic society we are now living in, that again women are judged only by their looks and not brains or ability. When not only our way of life as we know it in the United States, but the way the United States is perceived by the rest of the world is at stake, that we have again given proof that we are getting dumber and that celebrities (as all she is now) and their way of life is what is utmost on Americans minds.
And I just loved that “take you child to work day” when she ran from one foreign leader to the next to talk about how gorgeous she is and how are the children. That is why the press was not allowed to see how lame the conversation was or to ask questions that if not scripted she would say something dumb. She is an embarrassment to be running to maybe be president. If people would study the facts to see what the candidates are really for instead, of the lies that they put into their adds against their opponent and look at what and how they directed their lives in the past. How they were raised and what made them who they are.
Yea her tanning bed for our beauty queen unfortunately her governship that is more run by her husband then her and everything she says she believes in she has done the opposite in the past. She is all fluff and is another air head, that is why she is sheltered and is getting a crash course on how to be a political over night. If by a heart beat away she became our president you had better leave the country before it belongs to China or Russia or a mid Eastern country because that is where she will take us.

Sorry, but I sure don’t want people around me looking “ghostly.” I believe, like anything, moderation in tanning is the key.

People should educate themselves before commenting on UV exposure. A very small percentage of humans are subject to harmful effects of UV exposure, everyone else benefits.
Tanning is natures way of utilizing beneficial UV rays.

John Edwards (pre-sex scandal) was repeatedly mocked for his $400 haircut. So…men catch it too.
Palin IS a joke…and a hawt, baked alaskan mess. Madam Secretary, on the other hand, rocks the pantsuit like pastel super hero!

Just read through all the comments… I’m so annoyed by people who think that fair skin is some how wrong. I’m Irish and Polish and my skin color is a product of my heritage. You wouldn’t tell someone who was African-American that their skin was too dark and they should bleach it. Why should I subject my skin to dyes and excessive UV exposure? I’ll never understand why some people expect us all to be the same shade of beige. My skin color is lovely, and thanks to my rejection of tanning and regular application of sunblock, my skin will continue to look lovely for a long time.

Good for you, Naomi. I agree that we should be happy with whatever color we are! I think tanning, especially in a bed, is neither natural or healthy. while we do need vitamin D in our lives and it is best aquired from the sun, tanning is just not a good idea. As far as Sarah, if it is indeed a SAD light rather than a tanning bed, that could be the smartest move she’s ever made! I hope she does run for president in the next elections to ensure the Dems win again!
I would LOVE to have a woman as president, but not this woman. I want to be well represented, not set back 100 years by her ideals and rhetoric. (That’s a big word meaning BS, Sarah!!)
Perhaps if there was a viable female candidate, there would be less focus on her appearance and more focus on her abilities.
But…that’s probably wishful thinking…!!!
