Left-Handed

Holla, Barack Obama! If you’ve got lefty pride, wave your south paw in the air! Seriously, I am one proud lefty. Since I was little, I always thought of being left-handed as something that made me unique and special. I love that look of unwarranted admiration I receive when someone first discovers I’m a lefty. “Oh! I didn’t know you were left-handed,” they’ll say. “Yup! Born that way,” I reply smugly. Sure … sitting at dinner tables is a complex process and don’t even get me started about the blatant disrespect in regards to the lack of scissors, notebooks, and school desks for our kind. Thankfully, the days of lefties being freaks are over. In fact, it seems like scientists are obsessed with finding out more about us proud few—they’re constantly doing studies to find out what makes us so freaking cool. After the jump, some things studies have shown about south paws.

  • A study in the U.K. showed that lefties are more likely to enjoy school and be teachers’ pets. Duh! That’s because we’re smarter. But don’t tell the righties I told you that. [Daily Mail]
  • Left-handers are masters of the element of surprise. A study showed that this gives them an edge in sports and hand-to-hand combat. Their stealthiness may even be the reason left-handers survived extinction. But don’t worry. We’re not going anywhere. In fact, more people are being born left-handed these days. Natural Selection? [Union Tribune]
  • I will try to say this kindly without offending the masses. South paws tend to be more creative and excel in verbal and math skills. You know what that means ... better SAT scores! [Dr. Spock]
  • Studies have shown that lefties tend to have some special traits—leadership, quick thinking, independence, and adaptability. Not too shabby, huh? [Psychology Suite 101]

Sorry, my right-handed friends. I feel sorry for you.

Haha, waving mine too. You get used to the scissors, but the desk and notebook thing was uncomfortable. I remember my joy the first time I found a left-handed notebook.

Random fact that I heard somewhere:  There are a lot more lefty men than there are women.  I’ve always thought it was weird because I know plenty of left-handed women.  Has anybody else heard this, or did my brain just make this up?

I’m cross-dominant. So ha. I freak people out by writing with my right hand while drawing with my left, at the SAME TIME! OooOOooh, spooky!
And I’m both left and right-brained. So I’m really good at both art and math. Cross-dominants FTW!

My dad and both of my younger sister are lefties.  My dad can kind of write with both hands from his school days when he was forced to write right handed or get smacked with a ruler.  According to my mother when I was little and learning how to write, I used to stay up late trying to make myself write with my left hand so I could be like my dad.  Such a daddy’s girl!

Lefty here!  Former teacher’s pet, creative/artistic, with excellent verbal skills (average at math).  Not much experience with hand to hand combat, so I can’t speak to that!

Lefties unite! Fun Fact: While I was in college the vast majority of people in my journalism classes were left-handed, like at least 2/3.

In my immediate family, all of the women are lefties—me, my 2 sisters and my mom. It’s great to have been surrounded by that while growing up in a right-centric world!

Cross-dominant.  My mom is too.  I do think there should be more accommodations for lefties.  But that’s what happens when righties rule the world.

I love being a creative leftie!  my solution to spiral notebooks was to just flip them over and write from the back to the front.  That spiral stabbing you in the arm is a bitch.  Probably 50% of my family are lefties on both sides.  My grandpa was part of the generation where lefties were forced to switch, but he held out (p.s. he’s 84 today—happy birthday grandpa)!

Yay lefties!

My boyfriend is a leftie and I totally love it about him. Whenever I see another leftie, I let them both know they’re alike, like it is a club or something. But I work in food service, and at least in that area of work, it seems like there are a lot of lefties (almost every male I have worked with and some females) and none of them seem too bright. Maybe that’s what happens to the not so smart lefties, they end up making food?

I was born left-handed and did everything with the domnant left hand as a very small child, but my German kindergarten teacher tied my hand to my desk and made me write with my right hand.  Obviously, I have HORRIBLE handwriting because it’s not the hand I’m supposed to be writing with.  Ever since, it was mass confusion learning to do things as neither hand was dominant.

So in the last few years, I’ve focused on doing is natural.  And this former and new south paw says
HOLLA!  wink

I love being left-handed. Has anone else noticed that there seems to be a disproportionate amount of actors/tv personalities that are left-handed? I have wondered if that goes with the creativity thing.
