The Free Speech Coalition, the adult industry trade association, has named Hustler founder and publisher Larry Flynt as the recipient of its annual Legacy Award, to be presented at the 2009 FSC Awards in Los Angeles on November 14.
Hustler Magazine celebrated its 35th birthday this year in July with a special anniversary issue and a VIP birthday bash. Oh dear. The print/film porn biz really IS in trouble if they’re having to haul out Flynt for awards. Awards are a sure sign of bad times. Another jump-the-shark mini-moment. That or he’s dying.

I don’t think that this is a good indicator of the health of the adult industry because this award (The Legacy Award—i.e. a life-time achievement award) is given annually. If your claim that “Awards are a sure sign of bad times” were true, then the industry would have been on the decline for the past twenty five years. Nor do I believe that we should view this as a prediction of Flynt’s death. That’s really just too morbid.
