Sexist Advertising Alert: Does This Suit Look Good With The Model I Just Murdered?
Thanks to Feministe for pointing out 2008’s Most Sexist Advertisement—a print ad for Duncan Quinn suits which features a nicely dressed gentleman strangling a barely clothed model! Because nothing says debonair like chokin’ a bitch.

That’s a disgusting ad. Really. It’s more than enough to trigger flashbacks for women who’ve survived violent assaults. What is it lately? Womanist Musings blog called attention to the Pirelli Tire calendar (given out to due to the violent and racist nature of some of the pictures, again issuing a warning that they had the potential to trigger for women who’ve survived violent attacks.

Just what every douchebag suit wants: a human squeegee for his midlife crisis mobile!

Sadly, provacative ads are good business sense.

I would agree that provocative ads are Erin but I dont know if this is even considered such. Im guessing the marketing person who signed off on this going to print isnt the most compassionate of people and is more like a d-bag him or herself.

Great piece of advertising. The suit looks stunning.
People need to accept the art of others. Now I use caution to this term, because this is ONLY A PHOTOSHOOT; not “art”, the term some people use to do the real sick demented things, and pass it as an artform. So there really is no reason for this “oh I’m going to be sick” #&@$%. Yes, I am against the real nature of murder or harm against another soul, human or animal. But in this world, everything safe is boring, and we pass it by daily. Human nature is always going to want something more (sadly - this is why greed has #&@$% the world’s economy). Unless your a monk, or Yogi and have given up all desire, advertising is there to bring out emotions in everyone - Good or bad.

@Dominant If the dead person in the photo was a child, would you be so cavalier?

That guy actually does look like a sadist. And he has a ginormous forehead.

@ Dom
I agree that art is to be appreciated and this is a photoshoot as you point out but advertising suite with a dead women isnt exactly showing artistic inspiration or some vision, in my opinion mind you. On this particular photo, I dont think we will ever get a room concesus because some are more sensitive to it than others and some see it as advertising and some see it as trash so I would say its eye of the beholder on this.
@Amelia, although I personally dont care for this ad, Im sure some see it as just a photo and not as degrading as others would take it to be. There are photos for shoes that show women stepping on a mans back with a spiked heel, does this enrage others for portraying violence against men or assult? I highly doubt it. The one thing I cant stand behind you for is the addition of a child question, Im sure a lot fo acceptable or even borderline subject matter would be totally horrendous if you added a child but this one doesnt have on and for good reason. So I think its kind of hard to make a point with a hypothetical on this one, thats just what i think.

@Dominant, I do accept, and support, art, financially and through attendance. I don’t necessarily believe that advertising is art, however.
Further, I will accede that my own past experience influence my thinking - as they do everyone’s. Having been stabbed, beaten, raped, and left for dead, by my attacker (who is still at large) I will freely admit that I don’t find “everything safe is boring”.

@Dominant
I agree with what you say about art appreciation. If I found something like this hanging in a gallery, I would look at it much differently. But like you also suggested, it’s not art. It’s advertising and it’s intent is to compel men to buy clothing.

@miss
I agree, I am a huge art love and went to school for it, seeing this in a gallery or even here I wouldnt consider it trashy in its own context but as a basis to sell clothes I think its ridiculous to associate this with suits. Like you said miss, its to sell clothing to men and the sad part is, dbags who care enough about their suit and its label are probably the same who find this being linked as an ad and showing a dead woman as no big deal.

That suit is hideous with a capital Ugly. But, hey, it’s just a picture, and she isn’t dead, she’s being well-paid to pretend to be willing to be this freaky-looking douchebags sextoy. That, my young friends, is one convoluted sentence!
If we are gonna pissandmoan about ads, let’s start with those f@%$^ing geico commercials.
