Widowers At Higher Risk For STDs

In 1993 a Harvard study looked at a random sample of more than 400,000 couples in which both members were between 67 and 99 years old. Nine years later, researchers checked back in with the couples to find that 21 percent of the men and 43 percent of the women had lost their spouses—and a small portion of these newly single seniors had been diagnosed with an STD.

The women who had lost their husbands weren’t found to be at a significantly higher risk for STDs after their partners died, but the widowers had a 16 percent higher risk of being infected during the six months to a year after their wives died. What did they do, start picking up women at the cemetery when they paid visits to their dead wives’ graves? The men certainly took advantage of their newfound freedom—or, perhaps getting busy was simply their way of dealing with grief. [Newswise]

I’m not surprised by this, I work at an AIDS service organization and we have had several trainings about the rise in STI’s and HIV in people over 50.  I mean I think a lot of older people feel like this can’t happen to them, especially HIV, which they don;t know much about since it is still a fairly new virus, it was only discovered 28 years ago, and most outreach is not specifically aimed at them.  There is still a lot of misconceptions about STIs and HIV, especailly among baby boomers because there was never really much talk about STIs for them, they were just worried about unwanted pregnancy.  And it is difficult to tell people of a certain age about sex, because many are not comfortable talking about it in public or think they know everything they need to.  Just like a couple of weeks I was doing a condom demo at an event and this older woman, probably about late 50’s early 60’s told me, “I been playing with dicks since before you were born, so I definitely am not going to sit here and watch you play with one” and walked away.  So like I said ,I am not surprised, just saddened by this trend.

While visiting Boca Raton FL a few years back, the local news had a story on this trend. Our host called them ‘sex germs’.

It makes sense! Widowed senior citizens are at really high risk because they are not used to using condoms, considering the whole “safe sex” movement happened after most of them were married, and they aren’t worrying about getting anyone pregnant.
