Are Sean Penn And Robin Wright Penn Breaking Up?

At last night’s Academy Awards, Sean Penn won Best Actor for his performance in “Milk.” In his acceptance speech, he thanked everyone from screenwriter Lance Black to Harvey Milk, but he didn’t thank his wife, Robin Wright Penn. The two have had a rocky relationship, even filing for divorce in 2007 before reconciling in the spring of last year, but was his omission more than a simple mistake? After the jump, we look at four other Oscar speeches and their effects on the winner’s relationship.

In 2000, Hilary Swank neglected to mention her then-husband, Chad Lowe, in her Best Actress acceptance speech for “Boys Don’t Cry.” She made up for it by thanking him in her 2005 speech, when she won Best Actress for “Million Dollar Baby.” However, by 2006, the two had divorced.

Philip Seymour Hoffman forgot to thank his girlfriend, Mimi O’Donnell in 2006 when he accepted the Best Actor award for “Capote.” His flub doesn’t seem to have affected their relationship, as they welcomed a third child together last fall.

When Halle Berry took home the trophy for Best Actress in “Monster’s Ball” back in 2002, she referenced then-husband Eric Benet, saying he “is the joy of my life.” Too bad they separated the next year, and their divorce was finalized in 2005.

Reese Witherspoon, who won Best Actress in 2005 for “Walk The Line,” thanked Ryan Phillipe, calling him her “wonderful husband.” They separated just one year later and got divorced in 2007.

So, are Penn and his wife going to break up within a year? It’s quite possible given the way Hollywood couples come together faster than the speed of light and then split up even more quickly. But as we’ve seen with other couples, it doesn’t matter all that much whether you thank them or not. Basically, Oscar winners’ relationships are screwed either way.

I thought it was a bit odd he didn’t mention or thank her in his speech.  He did, however, clarify on Oprah that he didn’t thank her or any of his other family members, something about getting in trouble for forgetting anyone.
The biggest problem I’ve had with anyone’s acceptance speech was Julia Roberts’ for Erin Brokovich - she thanked everyone and never even mentioned the woman that made that role possible.

I read somewhere I think it was Perez Hilton that they had discussed him not thanking her earlier so he could talk about gay rights and get some things off his chest about it. I’m not sure if it’s true because I didn’t watch the Oscars, but good for them?
