French Elle De-Glams Scarlett Johansson
French Elle has bitch slapped the fashion and beauty industries with their most recent cover. Again. For the second time this year, their cover shoot was minimally made up and, dare I say it, almost natural looking. We loved when they shot hottie model Eva Herzigova sans makeup a couple months again, putting her in a pared down white blouse and similarly laid back hair.
This time though, we weren’t so thrilled. Yes, we applaud the move away from airbrushed impossibility in the general sense, but Scarlett Johansson’s cover is a tad confusing. She’s minimally made up and there doesn’t seem to be blatant airbrushing, but the clothing is a bit trampy, the hair super boring and the expression utterly vacant. This one’s just not doing it for us.
Let’s face it—Scarlett is not exactly know for her acting skills. Rather, the crux of her image is based on her being a hot ass, bodacious blonde. With the brunette locks, librarian-esque ‘do and semi-tacky outfit, Johansson looks like a mousy school marm tart halfway done up for a particularly desperate Girls Night Out. And we didn’t even think that combo was possible. What do you think of it?

I think she is ugly.

Wow. Pretty brutal. I, for one, have never been accused of being glamorous. So maybe I shouldnt judge. But I think she looks kind of pretty, in a NORMAL way. Not an overly made up, airbrushed, no chance of any regular person looking like this, kind of way.
Just my two pennies.

Way better looking with brown hair

@jojo32- my main issue with the picture is not the realistic angle, it’s that she doesn’t really look like herself. she’s not ugly in the pic, but she’s pretty forgettable, no?

I prefer the naturale look. Dress could stand to be changed. Overall, I think she looks great.

I actually think her face looks lovely, but I loatttttthe that shirt. LOATHE. Still, every time I look at her I want to nuzzle in her bosom. Looks so soft.

You and me both Amelia…she’s in my top 5 for “Future Wives That Are Not Only Way Out Of My League But I’ll Never Even Get To Talk To.”
She’s right after Natalie Portman….

I think Scarlett looks very FRENCH actually.

Personally, I think it’s an updated wink at France’s Empress Josephine, wife/muse of Napoleon and the scandalous celebrité of their day. Maybe?
lol, god, Amelia, that’s a visual. But do agree with the rest of your comment. She looks great au naturale (But, Elle, a tank?).
And…
Lily, “she doesn’t really look like herself?” You’re just used to seeing the churned-out glam Hollywood version. Who knows what a lot of celebs really look like—maybe just different, ie, like themselves. We know that she is blondish, but this is just an artistic choice, not an exposé to “out” the fuglé Americaines.

Amelia, you said you were raised by hippie parents. Didn’t they breastfeed children until they entered school back then? Some good times there, huh? lol

Yeah, this outfit is atrocious, but I like her hair and makeup. Very soft, sexy, French.

Scarlett Johansson has always been meh to me. I’m in love with her sultry voice and her great curves but I could do without the rest of her. She’s pretty average to me.

I thought this was suppose to be a positive female site, that promotes feminism.
I guess I was wrong. What’s wrong with her with natural hair color & lips that aren’t fire-craker red? I guess this site is just as hypocritical as the other ones.

I think she looks lovely, personally. But I’ve never quite understood criticizing models/actresses for their magazine covers—I always understood them to be at the mercy of the photographer/makeup artists. -shrugs-

I agree with Amelia, I think she looks great, but that shirt is incredibly stupid. It offends me with its non-fashiony lameness. And its logo. It has no place on a magazine cover. I want it out of my life.
I also second snuggling up to her bosom and taking an afternoon nap.

I totally agree with Amelia word-for-word. I don’t think she’s forgettable here at all. Scarlett could never be forgettable, even in this “bland” cover, I find myself scrolling up to look at it over and over again! She is a beautiful woman.

Scarlett Johansson is gorgeous but I can’t stand the outfit in this pic. In my opinion, her posture is just as bad. The facial expression gets a thumbs-down from me as well. It all looks uncomfortable and forced. :\
Big Yay on the au naturale however. I hope this becomes mandatory for all mags. I think of how horrible it must be to be in elementary/middle school today, surrounded by this inescapable pop culture circle-jerk… Show the celebs without airbrushing! Give 12-year-old girls a more realistic impression of what a woman looks like. Augrrh.

I always thought she was an average-looking girl with average acting chops. Here, she still looks average-looking, but a lot better with the dark hair.
