Roseanne Barr Thinks She’s Hitler And Dresses Like Him, Too
The new issue of Heeb has got me downright confused. The hip Jewish magazine’s feature story, “That Oven Feelin’,” features pictures of Roseanne dressed as Hitler, baking and eating burnt “Jew cookies.” The crazy doesn’t stop at the photos. In a pretty shocking interview with the 55-year-old Jewish actress, Roseanne seems to have dropped off the sane-train since her television days. Now residing in Utah, Roseanne blogs and writes essays about menopause and medicine and tells Heeb she’s the reincarnated soul of Hitler. Also that macadamia nuts are the staple of perfection? What the putz!? [Heeb Magazine]

Now I’m not Jewish, but I thought Holocaust jokes were never kosher. I can’t quite understand why Roseanne herself requested to don the dictator’s mustache and swastika for the shoot, not to mention why the mag let her. Maybe just for extreme shock value? The Heeb reporter described the “Domestic Goddess Hitler” as “maybe the last celebrity utterly incapable of giving a f**k.”
Obviously. Roseanne is like that crazy lady who lives in the woods. Holing herself up in Utah after years of tabloid flare-ups, Roseanne freely bashes alcoholics while mentioning her love of getting drunk off straight tequila. Then she says that vegans sniff coke and listen to bad music, after describing how she cooks her favorite pot roast. Wrapping up her mind-boggling interview, Roseanne packs up a care package for her son—a burnt “Jew cookie,” a Polaroid of herself as Hitler, and the swastika armband she wore at the shoot. How thoughtful?
Even after reading the piece, I’m still trying to figure out what the eff Heeb and Roseanne were going for. What do you think—just plain wrong or funny?

This is shocking! I also definitely thought jokes like this were not “kosher”- and these photos are particularly sick, I think.

I read about it the other day, only for those that appreciate the most irreverent of comedy. I’m not Jewish, but have family history in WW2. I still thought it was amusing.

I’m Jewish and no, I don’t think this is funny. I’m normally all about some inappropriate jokes, but I think this goes too far.

There is a time and a place for Holocaust jokes. While I’m not sure ‘Heeb’ was the place for them, I do think that this would be seen as far worse if a non-Jewish magazine had done them.
I did laugh though. Yes, the Holocaust was a horrible event and it should be treated with respect, but I’m one of those people who thinks that making inappropriate jokes and laughing at something helps to remove the terror of it.

It made me laugh. It made me laugh because she actually kind of resembles Hitler in that first picture. There are atrocities that have been committed that are worse than this. Not trying to lighten the situation. What happened then was horrible, ghastly, but there are jokes made about things just as awful.

I don’t find it amusing, but I see where they were going with it. I can see how that shock value thing played out and maybe it was worth it for them, because until now I didn’t even know that publication existed. But I don’t find it amusing and it makes me feel sad for Roseanne, honestly.

Although I don’t find this funny, it’s offensive, I am tired of people only thinking that the Holocaust was about Jewish people. Millions of non-Jews died in the Holocaust yet many people deny that. It’s quite similar those who deny that the Holocaust occurred. So my complaint is that those pictures were not just a stab at Jewish people, but all of those afflicted by the Holocaust.

Maybe Roseanne is the long lost love child of Hilter and Ava Braun. I mean think about it… Hilter was Jewish (so is Roseanne) and the resemblance is uncanny! Where’s Maury Povich at when you need a random DNA test??

@Coral, i definately agree with you there. There were so many different people who were subjected to such horrific treatment that the joke is just entirely inappropriate.
@GreenAura, Hitler was Catholic, not Jewish.

Irony done right can be quite effective. Mel Brooks made it his life project to bring down bigotry with humor, in fact he thought this was the best way when it came to pure evil. Wrote “Springtime for Hitler” (not to mention “Blazing Saddles”), we all laughed, and he walked away with a Tony Award for “The Producers”. Irony can tolerate a bit of ambiguity, but Rosanne seems to have crossed a line. Is it clear who is being made fun of here: Hitler or Jews? What if it weren’t Rosanne but David Duke or Rush Limbaugh holding the baking tray? The ambiguity would disappear immediately wouldn’t it. Rather than call it poor taste, I put think this is more a case of: “Rosanne Barr - You’re no Mel Brooks!”
