Jade Goody Dies At 27

Jade Goody died this weekend after a brief battle with cervical cancer at the young age of 27. She is survived by her two young sons and her husband. Though she probably didn’t register on your pop culture radar (she was a fixture on British reality TV), her story should serve as a reminder for all women to get regular pap smears, as a way of checking, preventing, and/or treating cervical cancer, which can spread and kill quickly. Please check out what we have written about the subject matter, after the jump, and make sure to schedule an appointment with your own doctor if it’s been more than a year since your last checkup.

I did not approve of the person Jade was on Big Brother Brittan. However in an odd twist of Karmic fate she became the person who is the face of Cervical Cancer and HPV. Me being a person with HPV. I can only hope that we can produce a foundation as large as the Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer. Right now I have not heard of a HPV/Cervical Cancer foundation. It upsets me because next to breast cancer, cervical cancer is the next biggest killer of women ranking in at #2.  We need more research. We need more than just shots. There is nothing that can break the heart of a woman other than being told after cryotherapy you won’t be able to have children. Whether or not that is true. I am not sure. After my epidemic with HPV I made solemn vow never to let a resident or intern touch me again. They tend to be a little rough and unprofessional. At the price I am paying for health care I refuse to allow anyone to practice on me. Only attendings.

So instead of Save the ta-ta’s I hope we can have our own solgan: Save the Skirt Squeakers!

I have to say that the insane amount of media coverage of Jade’s death annoys me slightly but there has been a 21% increase in women going for smears since her diagnosis. The issue is that the age in England for a first smear is 25 and in Scotland, N.Ireland and Wales the age is 20. There is an ongoing campaign to get the Government to drop it - which they should. I suppose if her diagnosis and very public coping with the illness saves a few lives, the she would have done some good, and I suppose no one can ask any more of someone than that.

I was sorry to hear of her passing. The death of a young woman, mother, and wife, is a sad event; no matter how much we liked or disliked her.

To Vanya: It is very sad when you see a child lose her mother. However the reason why I said I did not approve is because of this:

n January 2007, she was a housemate in Celebrity Big Brother.[7] During the show she was accused of racist bullying against Indian actress Shilpa Shetty.[8] Following her eviction from the show, she admitted her actions had been wrong and she subsequently made many public apologies.[7]

    You can read everything here:

Racism should never be tolerated. However Jade did make a good turn around in the end. And it is very sad that she has passed. Let’s hope that she will inspire other women to take care of their bodies so no more children will lose their mothers.

msPriss - At least she attempted to make up for it - altho whether or not that was to preserve her ‘career’ and thus her income is up for debate.

It’s unfortunate that she has died, but I just found her irritating and thick - and she is held up as an example of…well, I have no idea why people are saying she’s this people’s princess or whatever, I’d rather have other role models put on pedestals by the media. If she hadn’t been diagonosed with such a tragic illness, i doubt the press would be fawning over her death in such a ridiculous way now.

cyberpixie- I agree entirely. I never liked her. I never said I liked her or stood up for her. I find it repulsive that the media would reward her as a hero. She was a complete moron. However I would never doubt for a second there was not a ‘motive’ behind all of this.

@msPrissécyberpixie: Unfortunatley, even with her racist comments on Indian BB, Jade Goody was a pretty typical lower class British woman made good. People liked her because she was someone they could relate to, I guess. Sad, but true! I don`t mourn her passing, but I feel sorry for her boys and its always sad when someone young dies.

I`m not sure what the age for pap smear in the UK is, but I`m 21 and I was recommended I have one within the year.
