We keep hearing that industries related to sex and dating are some of the only ones not being affected by the recession. Apparently, sex is one of those things that doesn’t need to be eliminated from people’s lives, even when their wallets are thin. After all, it’s free! Of course, extra equipment and accessories cost money. In past months, sales at sex toy boutique Babeland and lingerie stores like La Petite Coquette have seen an increase in sales, even while other parts of the economy have plummeted. Now, one sex toy company is coming to the rescue of women who have lost their jobs during these hard times.

Pure Romance, which hosts Tupperware-like parties with sexier products, is giving away 1,000 consultant starter kits to women who have been laid off. The kits, which usually start at $99, include a selection of the company’s products, a training DVD, and other items that will help women get started hosting product parties and possibly bringing in more than $1,000 a week. If you’ve been laid off and want to get into an industry that’s doing relatively well, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) your story and why you’d be good at selling sexy stuff. We gotta say that selling cute vibes and high-end lube is better than resorting to stripping or prostitution when you need money.

Ugh. I did this job at home for a company called Ann Summers and I have to say though I was quite good at it, I found it utter #&@$%! I didn’t enjoy it much. You have to be very good at sales to do very well, plan incentives for customers to buy products, incentives to get the customer who is hostessing the party to invite more guests, plan “saucy” games, budget for products from your company to use as prizes for said games, recruit other people to do the parties, go to area meetings, etc etc. And thats aside from selling people massive vibrators who normally you would find gross, annoying, etc, seeing unattractive people in lingerie and having to sell it to them, and trying to engage people who only came to thier friends party because they felt obligated to and are either shy or think they are too good to be at a sex party.

Though it wasn’t my cup of tea (mainly because I did it when I was at uni and only wanted to do one party a week or so to bring in a bit of booze money and I quit because my area leader kept calling me up at stupid o’clock three times a week when I was trying to study banging on about targets and other such crap) I know some girls who love doing it and make a lot of money - some who have two parties a night most night. One of those girls sometimes makes 500 pound a *night*! The parties can be good fun and are very popular in the UK.

I much prefer stripping… but again, thats me. I would say to anyone turning to any portion of the sex industry in these though times that if its not something you think you would have a natural aptitude for, don’t bother.
