Rapex anti rape condom

We’re all for rape prevention, but when you can’t stop the crime, why not score immediate payback with the help of a little latex and some barbed plastic? That’s the idea behind rape-prevention condoms by RapeX. Basically, if you feel like you may be in danger one evening — exploring a foreign city alone, getting walked home by a cute stranger you just met—you put the device into your nether regions with an applicator, and anything that gets all up in your space will be gnarled by the barbs. They’re made of plastic, but those suckers have a nasty bite and will need to be surgically removed.

We hope you’ll never have to test out the RapeX, but we can pretty much guarantee the jerk on the receiving end won’t get very far once his man bits are being ripped open by your hidden defenses. [RapeX]

I love this idea.  But ouch, sounds truly painful.  I’d hate to walk out of the house knowing that thing was in me tho.  That would be a weird feeling.  “Hey, I might get raped, but at least the #&@$% that attempts it will suffer too”.

Just kind of strange to me…

you know it disgusts me to say this but here in the US there’s going to be scuzbag lawyers lining up to sue on the perps behalf.  while I completely agree they’d deserve what they get I can’t see how (legally) this would be seen differently than rigging a shotgun to your door or leaving a bear trap in your bedroom, etc.

@40yrolddad: Yeah, can’t you get sued for assault when you’re getting charged with rape? Perhaps a concealed weapon charge?

great idea, but I worry about a few nutjob women who maybe wanna seek revenge on some guy they’re sleeping with, or hell maybe some sadistic chick invites a guy home just to surprise him with this lol. I know women that would try that are rare, but damn, just one would be terrible. It would be difficult to prove whether it was rape, or just some crazy chick.

Although I would like to think no one would abuse this,..........there are some crazies in the world.

What’s to stop the man from retaliating in a fit of rage and taking your life over this, or doing to you as you did to him. All of these possibilities sound absolutely terrifying when you are dealing with someone crazy, especially someone who just got plastic barbs stuck in his penis.

I dunno… think it’s a bad idea, mainly ‘cause of the woman’s safety as others said. Anyone that pursues rape is determined and will only get pissed. Too little and too late.
I’d rather use more preventative things like mace, or a “Pussy Protector” which is a keychain fashioned into a catface as benign as Hello Kitty or Felix the Cat. But it is actually a form of Brass Knuckles, an illegal, lethal weapon. Better him than me.
Don’t know that any crazy woman with this gizmo could go undetected before a man would know first with fingers, etc.

I don’t know how I feel about this.  Seems like if they get far enough for this to do its work, it’s too late, and you’re already violated, and then you’re vulnerable to whatever he feels angry enough to do to you.  I hold a CCW permit in two states - pick up some pepper spray, a stun gun, a baton or a firearm if you’re comfortable (and *trained*).  I personally think prevention is a better route.

I remember hearing about these. They were designed in South Africa and attack themselves to the attacker, who would then need a hospital to have removed. I looked it up to see if I had remembered correctly and found this unfortunate statistic:
South Africa has the highest per capita rate of rape of any country in the world, at a reported 119 per 100,000 people, which translates to around 1.7 million women raped each year.

@averardoll:I can see the pluses of an area like that using these. If it was general knowledge that most women wore these there, someone might think twice before attacking. I can see more benefit if they could be used on a large scale that way. Those statistics chill me to the bone.

I see this ending up the way helping someone needing cpr ends up. COUNTER SUED. In todays USA people who mug others and get shot always counter sue. Did someone trip in your rose bush and break their arm? Yes? Well they are going to sue you. This will only hurt women and our rights, not as though we are not hurting enough when you can call the victim a whore and say that she was practically asking for it thus getting the case thrown out of court and then suing for defimation of character. The best defense is Mace and knowing how to deal with an attacker, never get taken to a second location and always scream, chances are the noise will not make you worth it. This device will not only hurt him but send him into anger over load. This will not deter anyone who has hands and determination, they can check you out internally. This is a nice idea but it won’t work.

Its sad that we have to go to such lengths. Rape is a horrible, disgusting crime. I honestly think that if I were ever raped, I wouldnt be able to live with myself. Not because of shame or guilt but because of sheer disgust with myself.

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS IN NO WAY TARGETED TO SURVIVORS OR RAPE. If this has happend to you and you were strong enough to overcome it, RIGHT ON for you! This is just MY thought on it.

Maybe the knowledge that these are out there would be enough of a deterrent for some? I vote for highly publicizing the development of WillPutPlasticBarbsInYourPenisThatNeedToBeSurgicallyRemoved condoms.

And you know, I don’t know. I like that they’re available. I totally get the point about being sued for inflicting that kind of damage, but to me I feel like that’s worth it TO NOT GET RAPED. That’s what I’m thinking anyway.

To those who think that criminals countersue when they’re injured during the commission of a crime:

any stats on that? and would that justify NOT using the device because you’re scared of being sued by some idiot? No offense, but sounds like a lame excuse to me.

Lawsuits aren’t scary.  You just make sure you have a competent attorney.  And then when you win, your attorney sues the criminal for legal fees.

MsLiberal, I don’t have any stats, but I do know that at least some (hopefully most, or all) states have statutes which prevent recovery for injuries sustained in the commission of a crime for which the perpetrator is charged. So the rapist couldn’t sue you for medical expenses or pain and suffering.

HOWEVER, what happens when a girl puts this in before going out to the club, gets a bit too tipsy, brings a guy home, and forgets that it’s in? Would-be rapists might not have standing to sue for damages, but the innocent guy who ends up a victim of a girl’s drunkenness/forgetfulness/sadism/whatever sure as hell does. I fully expect that there will be lawsuits, possibly even a products liability suit for an unreasonably dangerous product.

Also, lawyers can’t sue for legal fees. At the end of the trial, they can request that the court grant attorney costs and fees, but that is up to the judge.

This product leaves a lot open for debate. One thing that comes to mind is not only the girl who forgets she has it in, but what about a girl who uses one of these on her partner for whatever angry or justifiable (to her) reason?

Not to be inflammatory, but would we be crying “what about the crazy chix!!?!?!?!” for a wooden baton? Someone could get hit in the NUTS!

I do recognize that this plays on a primal fear for men, but doesn’t that make it MORE effective?

What bearing do the actions of a few unbalanced individuals have? That’s never stopped the production of more deadly weapons, things that were made to KILL rather than maim. Do you ask the same questions there? (“But wont some guy get really upset at his wife and shoot her face off?”)

If a chick was crazy enough to use this for spite, she was crazy enough to get a gun and shoot someone’s arm off.

And also I would think that having there penis gored up would only piss off the rapist to do something worse..like kill, or do the same punishment back.

@ 40yrolddad

This is different from leaving a shotgun aimed at a door or a bear trap in your bedroom because that is protection of property and deadly force cannot be used where as this would be self-defense where deadly force could be used if appropriate.

My take on this product is that if you are going to get into a situation that you think you might need this, your behavior should be modified. A lot of crime prevention is just thinking ahead of time.  Lock your doors and don’t go walking in strange neighborhoods at night sort of thing.

They can definitely be used inappropriately like any weapon. Guns are very dangerous if used incorrectly and for the wrong reasons, but they are also extremely valuable weapons.  This does seem like it would hurt but not incapacitate a rapist and therefore leave room for retaliation.

I agree with everyone else…I think anyone who is crazy enough to rape you is probably not only going to rape you, but then beat the hell out of you when he realizes there are now barbs in his penis.  Also, I can’t ever remember thinking… “Hmmm, I’m going to a pretty sketchy area and there’s a good chance I’m gonna get raped tonight, better put on my anti rape equipment!”  What the hell?  It all seems kind of strange to me…

I do not understand all the comments about how the RapeX just makes the rapist more likely to beat/kill the victim. We’re talking about a RAPIST - this is someone who already has serious intent to harm and could easily beat or kill the victim anyway. A woman (or man) being attacked should (in virtually all cases) do anything to hurt the attacker bad enough that he can’t do any more harm.

That said, I don’t think it’s practical - except maybe in a a setting like averardoll cited, where rape is endemic.

I think people are forgetting that there are parts of the world (Sudan, for example) where a woman faces the danger of being raped just to go get water for her family, or to get food, go to work, to the doctor, etcetera.
As to AIDS, that is an interesting idea, but it seems to me that all the blood would be contained within the condom.  Also, a woman would be as likely to get AIDS from being raped in the first place… if this helps catch the rapist, I am all for it.  I also think that whatever rage the rapist might feel would be subdued by the pain he must go through to have barbs in his penis.  This would probably cause him to double over in pain, and not be able to act upon this anger.
Yes, this is a sad product.  Yes, there could be counter-suing.  But I agree with the reader who posted that this could be a great deterrent.  Once society gets outraged about violence against women, once rape is no longer accepted (and it is accepted by some members of society) as acceptable, well, then, a product like this may become unneccesary.  Until then, I hope this product helps protect some women and girls who need it the most.  I understand the confusion, repulsion, doubt about this product, and while most women know that rape in the US is unfortunately a frightening possibility, keep in mind that in some parts of the world it is almost a given.  Let those #&@$% get a few barbs in their penises.  I hope they think twice about violating women.  I’m all for this.
