Rachel Maddow Talks About Being A Butch Anti-“Anchorbabe”

Rachel Maddow just doesn’t give a flying f**k about “being pretty,” thank you very much. But she still has to put up with a lot of annoying busybodying. You know: “Rachel, if you just put more makeup on, why, you’d look so lovely!”
The Village Voice interviewed Maddow, the host of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show and a butch lesbian, for its “Queer Issue.” Maddow calls herself “mannish,” she said, adding “I wear just as much makeup as the other guys on MSNBC.”
But interestingly, she doesn’t think there is any more focus on her butch-ness than there are for other TV show hosts. “I’m not Anchorbabe, and I’m never going to be,” she said. “My goal is to do the physical appearance stuff in such a way that it is not comment-worthy.”
Yeah, no one (except maybe Pat Buchanan) wants Maddow’s short hair and suits to detract from what comes out of her mouth. But truly, we do breathe a sigh of relief each time she delivers some bad-ass commentary about her appearance. She only makes the fem-bot army of lipglossed Anchorbabes on other channels look ever more ridiculous!
Take, for instance, when Rachel tells the Voice how she is told all the time, “You could be so pretty!” And then, she just laughs.
Sigh. Our girl crush on Rachel just keeps growing. [Village Voice]

Rachel is so girl-crushworthy. DH and I are both crazy about her. I also think she is very pretty as is. I wouldn’t change a thing about her looks or style.

I was gonna say, as everyone seems to agree, she is already attractive. I think people take her MORE seriously because she’s not all gussied up.
What, exactly, is butch about her? She acts, *gasp*, like a HUMAN BEING rather than a dead-eyed, bleached out, giggly reporter with another overly sing-songy voice. That’s not being butch, that’s just being real.

As cute as I think Rachel is, a big part of my crush is due to her personality. She’s got it all, she really does. She’s smart, she’s funny, she’s nice and yes, she’s adorable! I’m willing to bet you’d recognize Rachel at a grocery store since she’s keeps make-up at a minimum on tv, whereas most so called anchor babes wouldn’t be recognizable at all. Rock on Rachel!
