Quotable: Carolina Herrera On Less Than Ideal Customers
“Have I ever been horrified to see someone in my clothes? Many times, but I close my eyes and look the other way.”
—Carolina Herrera, who wouldn’t be in business if she only sold dresses to the Renee Zellweger-double-zeros of the world. Riddle me this: Shouldn’t she be thankful/glad/happy that people buy and love her clothing, periodthat’sit? [The Moment]

Oh, give her a break. She’s an artist & her work is stunning. I can’t imagine working on something for hundreds of hours (from renderings to collection), & then see it on a woman who jacks the whole look up. LOL.
And I reread the quote several times (& followed the link) but never made the connection to thin/skinny/“double-zero.” You’re putting words in her mouth.

@Molly Jean Exactly. I absolutely LOVE her and would be completely appalled if I saw someone wear a piece of hers that just didn’t work for them.

sorry, i agree with the author. she’s a businesswoman, not just an “artiste.” Her clothing IS beautiful, but she sounds pretty elitist here. It’s her customers’ business what they do with the clothes that they spend money on.

Designers’ contempt for the people who buy their designs is all too common, and never extends as far as refusing their money. I don’t by the “artiste” argument. Clothes are meant to be worn, and if you don’t want yours worn by the unworthy, put them under glass.

I lean toward Rose’s position on this. I did want to throw out an alternative, which would be that she may simply hate to see something she worked very hard on, being casually thrown on and not “appreciated” - styled poorly, mismatched, I dunno. That would be an opinion that wouldn’t offend me, because I’d think her hard work would afford her the right to feel that way.
Blah blah, bottom line, once you put something up for sale, it’s for sale in every sense.

One more idea…
Since fashion appropriates human beings as advertising mediums, it may be that she is twisted enough to hate a bad advertisement. She may not want to align her brand with people who have come to represent viewpoints she is opposed to, for instance.
Oh my god I’m rambling. BOTTOMER LINE is that the product as an entity is considered more important than the person. OK I’m done for real.

I pretty much think she just sounds like a total a-hole. When you make things and SELL them, you don’t get to pick who gives you thousands of dollars for them. Go cry into your pile of money.

she may be referring to less than desirable celebs wearing her clothes. i sure wouldn’t be too excited to see octomom or even lindsay lohan in my designs.
