Cute Boy, Cute Seals: What’s Not To Like?
Oh, look! A PETA campaign which doesn’t offend anybody! Could it be so?
We’re not sure what Brody Jenner, star of the reality show “Bromance” and Kim Kardashian‘s step-brother, has to do with clubbing baby seals ... but he’s hot, so whatever.

His hair sorta matches the way the seal’s fur is drawn. And the seal sort of looks like a Seussian version of a seal.
But I agree - shockingly non-offensive for PeTA.

Ugh. Brody Jenner doesn’t do it for me and I am sick and tired of people who know next to nothing about the seal hunt campaigning against it. I don’t like the hunt either, but people feel the need to say “barbaric!” and “disgusting!” and “Canada should be ashamed!” because of the major cuteness factor of the seals themselves. If they were giant ice rats, the general public would not be nearly as outraged.
Those cute little whitecoats (the babies) are not hunted, and yet that is the primary image you see on all of PETA’s anti-sealing campaign ads.
There’s a lot to this debate. I just don’t have it in me to argue anymore.

Oh, and for the record, I didn’t mean to burst the “nobody’s offended!” bubble. I’m not offended, just a little miffed… At PETA, not at the lovely article-poster!

@Typewriter: I was just going to say that! Also, it’s not just your average every day Canadian who hunts seals. It’s natives who have special permission to do it, and history tells us they’ve generally done a pretty good job with the environment.

Well duh, PETA only uses women in the crude, offensive and objectifying ads!

I came to defend the seal hunt, which most people completely misunderstand, but Typewriter and lea322 beat me to it!

its not seal hunting itself that is the problem. it is the cruel manner in which the seals are killed. i think the fact that they are killed by natives who have special permission is irrelevant. there should be no such thing as special permission for animal cruelty.

Since i don’t know who Brody Jenner is and i don’t think he has a job (being Kim Kardashians stepbrother is not an employee code) i don’t call this putting a face on or to a problem.
Hey BJ (wink)—if you want to be an actor get an agent who can find you SCRIPTS. See how far you can go.

There is SO much more wrong with PETA than it’s offensive ads…try hypocrisy, supporting terrorist organization ALF, slaughtering animals (yeah.) and nutso ideology, to name a few. I wish celebrities (or everyone, for that matter) would research the organizations they support before endorsing them.

Where I live, you can get locally printed t-shirts that say I ♣ Baby Seals across the chest and they’ve been big sellers for several years. (Just to clarify, they’re meant to be ironic.) It’s been a major debate here and the shirts are some peoples’ way of making their pro-hunt statement. A lot of people even within Canada don’t get it, though.
