Questionable Guy Trend: The Man Skirt

Marc Jacobs In A Skirt

While we’re still not sure how we feel about men in tights, couture designers like John Galliano, Comme des Garçons, and Etro are putting men in skirts and sending them down the runway.  And we’re not talking tribal Scottish kilts here either—a woman could easily wear these duds for dudes.  The designer taste makers claim the look of a skirt for men has been catching on all over Europe this past season and now they have been showing off the menswear trend during the Spring/Summer 2009 Fashion Week in New York.

So far, this style has been seen on the high profile designer Marc Jacobs. On Monday, he reigned in a “purple pain” colored one to go to a party with his muse, Victoria Beckham, and also wore a black kilt to collect applause at his own fabulous runway show. But are the average men of America ready to feel the fashion wind cause a draft in their underoos? More practically, are men equipped to handle a Marilyn Monroe Seven Year Itch style moment over some subway grates? While women have already conquered the slack and the tuxedo, we’ve been holding a monopoly on the skirt. It truly seems like the last bastion of sexism in fashion. But now that the shoe is on the other foot, are we really ready to share the skirt? You tell us! [New York Magazine]

Personally, it’d be fine for if my male friends wanted to rock this look—and god knows, they’d rock it good…but the guy I am doing, well, that is another case. I like doing dudes that look good, but not fashion victim type of guys. If he’s going to be in a skirt, it better be one in the form of a towel post shower about to be ripped off to reveal his most important accessory… Just call me old fashioned.

If any guy I know starts wearing a skirt, I’m moving to Wasilla. Or somewhere else full of rugged, snowmobilin’ men immune to ridiculous fashion ridiculous trends.

As A guy, I’m for it.  However, I have issues as to what would be acceptable.  I’ve seen a number of types of kilts - modern and traditional - I think are all acceptable, but I think something with less pleats should also be available. I prefer knee length and not so narrow that it would restrict big leg movements like running or taking 2-3 steps at a time going up the stairs.  I would suggest starting with a casual look.  I don’t think it should start out as formal wear. Finding acceptable footwear would be very important also.

Skirts are an inferior form of clothing. Women wore skirts because they were easier to make and while mostly working in the home didn’t have the need for pants.
Why would anyone want to down grade?

Since I know everyone is entitled to an opinion but when have skirts been inferior, what a load of rubbish! I wear skirts every day, in preference to trousers(pants to our US friends).
If men want to wear skirts then fair enough but unless its a kilt then some leg shaving would be in order I’m afraid otherwise its not a good look! Also there are some woman who haven’t got the legs for skirts so it stands to reason that some men will or won’t.

Dunno. My boyfriend’s been wearing Utilikilts for years, and he looks pretty hot in them. He’s definitely got the legs. Of course, in his case, it doesn’t hurt that he’s built like a bouncer, so if anyone does have an opinion, they’re keeping it to themselves.

Actually, in Greco-Roman times, pants were considered feminine clothing; they were what Arab harem girls wore.  A real man would never be caught dead in anything but a toga or a skirt.

But this latest trend doesn’t surprise me.  As women have become more powerful, their little boys look up to them as role models and want to dress like them.  Look how they took to long hair, earrings, dying their hair, and have you seen how many guys are wearing eye makeup these days?  Skirts and dresses are just another part of their feminine evolution.

Of course, the irony here is that as soon as men start wearing skirts, women will want to wear men’s skirts!

Can’t see why it has taken so long to be back in fashion for men.  Versatility & choices are a good thing.  They’re cooler for warm weather and warm for winter matched with long socks.  Makes more sense especially for comfort !!

Okay so I’m a guy and I used to have this awesome (Full-Length) skirt that looked alot like a pair of Tripp pants. (i.e. they looked like wide legged jeans but it was a skirt) it was a camo skirt too and a lot better looking than these crappy ones. For fashion’s sake at least put them in better skirts or ones that don’t look so feminine. ALSO, make sure the models have the right look for a skirt.

Most of these are just tacky. I guess the designers where running out of ideas. And that’s bad to say considering Tripp isn’t all that great in terms of fashion. But whatever, I like some of everything.

These skirts suck. Period.

Close but no cigar. your not “old fashioned” you’re a garden variety bigot. What’s good for you is not allowed for “those people” also known as “guys”.

Ms. LeFay, bunnymatic, Alabama are added to the “choices for men” bigotry list. Steven is all alone in the Woman hater list.

I believe the skirt for men is in, and getting more attention. Some might thinking that is impossible, but if you try to think critically you must say that a skirt is a perfect wardrobe for male’s body shape. And there is no doubt that men are ‘wrong’ in pants because of the crotch.

Women tend to wear all parts of [former] typically men’s
clothing, and even the skirt originally is a male’s garment -just see the history- and when men are trying to use only one single part of clothes which are used recently by women men are crossdresser. I think there is a big knot in somebody’s brain, further to say no equality at all. Remember the words of a Dutch female speaker at women’s day 2005: “The emancipation of women will be finished and coming to an end when men wearing skirts”.

“That is not men who are feminizing, that is the skirt which is masculinizing.” is a way to understand the new trend, but I think it is really time for men going into a change and go skirted.
