Poll: Would You Rather Be Called A Slut Or Fat?
Our society has a lot of thoughts about what women should be, and many of these ideas have to do with weight and promiscuity. The ideal is that a woman is thin and pure. In an article on The Huffington Post, writer Charlotte Hilton Andersen considers whether it’s better to be called a slut or fat—two names that women usually don’t enjoy being labeled. So, which would you rather? Justify your choice in the comments!

I really think the word slut, at least in my world, has been taken back by people who love sex and embraced. I’d think dumb or fat are the two low blows people go for, like who the hell wants to be called stupid fat ass or big dumb oaf.

I’m petite and I’ve just always had a high metabolism, (though its starting to slow down, guh). So between the choices of the two, I’d choose fat. But it’s unlikely that thats the direction anyone would go.
Obviously since weight is a physical feature ‘fat’ is easier to defend than ‘slut’.

Actually I rather be called fat. At least fat people can loose the weight, sluts will always be known as sluts. I love sex and embrace it, but with my partner not with every guy I meet. I guess, everyone has their different definition of a slut. To me a slut, is a girl who sleeps with almost every guy she meets, including her friends boyfriends. I know girls who have sex with different guys but they aren’t sluts, they don’t show off sleeping around and don’t dress like hootchie momma’s. To me, the term slut is also associated with whore, skank, hoodrat, cheap, it’s just what comes to mind when I hear, “slut”.
I just rather be called fat, i’ll lose the weight, and boo ya!

I’ve been called both, and even though I know neither are true, I’m more secure in my non-sluttiness than in my non-fatness. So I’d rather be called a slut because it would be easy for me to brush off.
For the record, I’ve slept with only 3 guys. The person who called me a slut was my first college boyfriend. And I was still a virgin. RIDDLE ME THAT.

I’d much rather be called fat, because at least you aren’t attacking my morals. And, I look in the mirror and know I’m not fat, and I can also do things to improve that image. But calling someone a slut is a blow to their integrity. I’d rather people respect me for my actions than for my appearance.

I picked slut because I think people who go around flinging the word around really dont know what they are talking about. I am a confident, sexually aware woman, and if thats what slut means… sure Im that, but like every girl that grew up with cosmopolitan and barbie to look to, fat I work not to be and I do not like to be called…

Two great tastes that taste great together—why choose just one?
Name-callers who opt for either (or both) just reveal themselves to be unimaginative and I really don’t care what dullards think of my big old slutty ass.

I picked fat, because its true. I have more than a few pounds I need to lose. If you knew me, the word slut could never and would never apply. The only person who could call me a slut would be a Muslim woman who is covered from head to toe and calls me a slut for showing my arms.

Ok, Generally neither would bother me! Like my mama always said… as long as you know who you are then thats all that matters! However for the great debate I did choose “Fat” reason being is..I can prove I am not Fat..but who could prove they are not a ” Slut” also like Humble bee said .. Fat people can loose weight and well sluts can’t take back the amount of people they Fuc*eD! Why is it that people want to define their own term for Slut… it is what it is and well if thats you than you are what you are!! Thanks!

I would rather be called fat because the word slut is so demeaning and judgemental.

I’m fat, and I’m cool with that so when someone calls me fat I kinda figure if that’s the worst thing they can find to say about me then I’ve got it pretty good. Weight can be lost, ugly behavior is not so easliy changed.

I pick neither. I AM fat (so anyone calling me that would simply be truthful), and I don’t particularly care if people think I’m having more sex than them: go me!
I vote for “stupid”.

Slut. Because I know I’m not a slut, but I’m pretty self-conscious about my weight.

Call me both. I can lose weight and stop sleeping around. The person calling me that, however, will forever be stupid.

Either, to be honest, because I don’t consider either to be true. I have been called both, due to my profession (which wouldn’t allow me to be fat!) but I really don’t care. If they’re the best insults someone can find for me then I’m not really going to be overly affected by that.

Why the hell would I care about what another imperfect human being thinks about my morals? Or my weight, for that matter…I only chose “slut” because like I said in a previous post, I embrace my sluttiness! I’m a happy slut, dammit! It’s not so easy to embrace being fat, but I couldn’t care less about that, either. I’m healthier than most average-sized people I know, especially since I’ve recently quit smoking!

Furthermore, since some people think that overweight women don’t get laid, being called a slut would be a compliment.

i wouldnt want to be called a slut because im not. and when im single i keep my sex life personal.

I’d probably laugh at both, but I’d mind more being called a slut. Not because there is anything inherently wrong with promiscuity, but because the insult implies that there is something wrong with a woman who is freely sexual. I’m neither, but calling me fat is just ridiculous (when I was working for TV, one clothes designer once implied I needed to lose weight, I shrugged her off and had another huge helping of cake), calling me a slut means that you don’t know #&@$% about me, but would still like to hurt me in some way. And implying that my being sexual is morally reprehensive sounds like a good way to you.

Bingo, Hit0rMiss Foody-Judy: we’re separated conjoins on this one. The fact that I’m neither (by webster’s terms), makes it that much more delicious.
...in fact, I’m having a deja vu of inspired Namers’ “Five Basic Food Groups Pyramid” (a la 2nd grade coloring project): FAT and SLUT just being two of the you-can-guess-the-rest essentials. Combo for bonus points/maximum effect. Spew to the fat, slutty hand.

i chose “fat” not because i am overweight and would be accurate but because i feel “slut” is about someone forcing their morals and values on you. plenty of people have their own idea about what’s the ideal body type but that’s doesn’t have much to do with who you are. i resent when people try to force their ideals on me.

ahh! i’m appalled at these results! EVEN if “slut” is a term you throw around with your girlfriends, being called a name like that by anyone else is unacceptable. i know many women are sensitive to ridicule because of their weight but on a site where sexual freedom is praised so highly, i can’t believe most of you would accept “slut” over “fat”. we shouldn’t be called sluts because we are open about our sexuality, please think better of yourselves! if someone called me fat, i’d think they were pathetic for being so unoriginal. be confident in who you are, all the time! if someone called me a slut, i’d feel like they stripped away my dignity for the sake of making themselves look “cool” and i’d probably slap them across the face. being called a slut is in the same category as “dirty whore” and that is NEVER a compliment. language matters, and the connotations do not die.

@LAGIULIA… See this is my point.. you are defining the word SLUT as IF it means freely Sexual… WTF . This is not the meaning of Slut.. So ladies stop making up words and terms for the word.. We should all know what SLUT means and it does not mean being sexually empowered or freely sexual or any other term! I don’t mean anything is a rude way.. I am just saying that why is it we try and define the word to make it appear or sound better then what it really is! Funny becasue most sluts would not define themselves as sluts but Sexually empowered or some other stupid term .. I think this is done to make themselves feel better about being a Slut! I once asked a man .. why is ok for a man to Fu*k tons of people and women it is a double standard… his respone was absoulty great.. he said becasue a man can go home at the end of the night and feel nothing about it, however a women would go home and cry, feel used, cheap, the need for validation..if you are one of these women then I hate to break it to you but you are a SLUT.. If you can go home at the end of the night and brush it off and just think to yourself what a fun night and have no worries, concerns, tears etc.. then you can define yourself as FREELY SEXUAL!

I would much rather be called a slut, because I know perfectly well that I am not, and that someone calling me a slut means either, A; they are just trying to make up something “bad” about me, so there’s clearly nothing wrong with me, and it’s them, or, B; they actually think I’m a slut, meaning they can’t figure things out and their opinion is worthless.
So, I can just laugh it off.
But someone calling me fat would, sadly, confirm my fears, that have developed since I gained about fourty pounds.
However, I’d be more insulted by being called dumb than fat.
