Until a couple months ago, I didn’t know any single guys who owned cats. Men are supposed to be into dogs, or so we’re told, them being “man’s best friend” and all. I randomly looked up the word “wuss” in an online dictionary, and the sample sentence reads, “Cats are for wusses, dog men say.” But I live in a city where dog ownership could be compared to driving a Hummer. Being in possession of either requires a big commitment in both time and money, and just as it’s impossible to find a parking spot big enough for an H3, dogs can be an inconvenience. So, men seem to being latching onto cats as an acceptable furry friend no longer reserved for lonely single women—I’ve met two who own two cats each in the last month alone.

An excerpt of self-professed “cat man” Tom Cox’s book Under the Paw: Confessions of a Cat Man reads: “Being a heterosexual man and admitting to another heterosexual man that you like cats can feel a little like telling him that you still sleep alongside your childhood collection of teddy bears.” He has six cats.

I’m wondering what you think about guys who own cats—cool or creepy? [NOTE: I never really understood why some people are so into cats, but then I saw a tiny kitten AND met a cool cat in the same week, and now I’m changing my tune.] [The Times, U.K.]

Um, I think it’s a turn-off, but I’m not real partial to “cat women” either.

ARE YOU READING MY MIND!?  I spent a good hour on a date last night talking about cats.  Have no idea how this happened, I’m going with he brought it up.  When I noticed how enthused he was talking about his cat, I couldn’t help but want to kill myself.  Buuut instead of doing that I just madeout with him to shut him up.

i am big fan of cats. and a big fan of men with cats. in fact i would ALMOST come close to saying that it would be a deal breaker if he didn’t have a cat.

Men should have dogs (especially of the large and/or sporty variety).  Women should have dogs (any variety).  Cats are impersonal and alarmingly self-reliant.

I’m a cat guy — grew up with them, and like the fact that they take care of themselves. But now I’ve got a hedgehog. So there’s that.

I had a cat for a couple years and no matter what the hell I did (I’m OCD so I cleaned the litter box DAILY), it still smelled like poo. Would not like to date someone who’s apartment smelled like poo.

You’re right. There’s no getting rid of “cat smell.” I had a cat-loving friend with long hair, and her hair always smelled like cat. I’m allergic to them so especially bad.

I loved cats when I was younger, but after my cat died I became severely allergic to all cats.  I’m now pretty stuck up when it comes to the cat/dog comparison.  I think dogs are better in all ways.  You can train them to listen to you (and perform tricks!), they pee/poop outside (save for those drunken nights when you forget you own a pet and get home at 1 AM to find a nice puddle), they are endlessly affectionate and you can get rough with them without getting the sh*t scratched out of you.

I’ve met some cats that defy the rules of normal stuck up, self reliant, pretentious felines, but they are few and far between.  smile

People have so many bs reasons for why they don’t like cats; most have never even lived with cats. I like both cats and dogs, but I can say that cats are actually A LOT easier to live with and they can be very needy for attention like dogs, so the saying of “cats aren’t friendly” is not true. A man with cats would not bother me just like a man who owned dogs. If anything, it would probably be better than he had cats because then I wouldn’t have to compete with any dogs for his attention!

I think guys with cats are cool. They like animals and aren’t caught up with macho image bullshit. But I love cats, so I can relate to them.

honestly..saying cat men are wussies is like saying wussies and gay dudes only wear pink. it’s thinking for people with blinders on. wake up!

I can understand a person preferring one species over the other, but I find it unfair and demeaning when people claim they “hate” cats when they’ve never even owned one. I don’t have full credibility either since I only own two cats and have never owned a dog. Personally, I enjoy cats and dogs in different ways and can acknowledge that both have pros and cons. Though I must admit, there is something about cats that just captivates me; they are so graceful and small, yet powerful and intuitive.

I would not care if a potential partner had a feline or canine companion, because dwelling on something so insignificant is just pointless. However, I do think that a guy who is confident in saying he likes cats is attractive since he is obviously comfortable to be who he is.

To the person who said they own a hedgehog: You are awesome! I hope I can bring a lovely little hedgie into my life someday. smile
