Sleep With Marilyn Monroe ... For All Eternity
Septuagenarian Elsie Poncher is removing her late husband’s remains from his resting place so that she can sell his graveyard crypt on eBay, and the bidding starts at $500,000. Why is this plot such hot property? Richard Poncher’s crypt is directly above the one that belongs to bombshell icon Marilyn Monroe.
Elsie wants to pay off the $1.6 million mortgage on her 1.75-acre Beverly Hills home, so she’s hoping one lucky eBay bidder will help her out.
Richard purchased two crypts—one for him and one for her—in the Westwood graveyard from baseball player Joe DiMaggio, Monroe’s former husband, in 1954. Monroe didn’t die for another decade, so no one knew of the crypt’s potential value. Richard died 23 years ago and has been laid to rest—face-down over Marilyn, per his request—ever since.
After Richard’s crypt has been sold, Elsie said she’ll put her late husband’s remains in her crypt, which they will share. They’ll be in esteemed company! This cemetery is where anyone who’s anyone is buried. It’s the resting place of Farrah Fawcett, Rodney Dangerfield, Dean Martin, Natalie Wood, Merv Griffin, and Truman Capote.
Just keep in mind that Hugh Hefner purchased the crypt next to Monroe for $75,000 in 1992, so the lucky bidder will have to be feet from Hef for all eternity. [L.A. Times]

Added fun factoid: Minnie Ripperton and Mr. Howell are also buried in the same cemetery!

I thought this was pretty callous until I got to the part where he’s been lying face down on top of another woman for the last 23 years.

I’m pretty open-minded but there is something about this post that is a little disturbing. I never heard of any wife wanting to disturb her husbands resting place after so many years unless its necessary.

Who gets buried face down anyway? I thought that was a taboo.

@bogart: Gold diggers wouldn’t mind doing so because after all, they never loved their husbands in the first place, and they want the money to pay off a house. It’s so petty.
