Photoshop FAIL: Ralph Lauren Model Says She Was Fired For Being Too Fat
On Friday we told you about the controversy surrounding a Ralph Lauren print ad which featured a photograph of a model that was Photoshopped to s**t, whittling her waist to bizarre thinness. Ralph Lauren reps have since said the photo was an accident and doesn’t represent their brand ideals. Well, that model, Filippa Hamilton, appeared on “Today” this morning to blow up Ralph’s spot even more, claiming the brand fired her for being too heavy and not being able to “fit” in the clothes anymore. Check out her interview, above.

If Ralph Lauren wants her at a certain size and they put size/weight restrictions in the contract, then it absolutely makes sense for them to dump her if she doesn’t follow the contract in that way.
It sounds like this model is trying to argue against unfair weight standards for models. And that makes sense - I’m all for getting away from 100% sticks on the runways and in magazines - but that is NOT the issue here. Of course she’s not going to sue, she knows she doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

Is it legal to require a person to stay dangerously underweight in order to keep their job?

I understand how models can create unhealthy beauty standards but that’s really not their problem. A models job is to keep her body thin. Her only job is her body so I really don’t have sympathy for her. Models aren’t real people anyway (JK). Tell your kids!

She’s so brave to talk about this publicly. For those of you saying Ralph Lauren is correct, seriously picture what this woman looks like in person: 5’10, 120 lbs. She must be not only slender, but gaunt as it is. 120 is very slender for someone 5’8. They are really saying that a model must be beyond thin, that emaciation is the requirement for the job. That is simply unacceptable. We’re talking about human beings here, and enough models have died.
I completely support her.

at 5’10 and 120 lbs, her BMI is 17.2. The lowest healthy BMI is 18.5. Just saying.
