Over-The-Knee Socks: Cute Or Repulsive?
Last week on MTV’s “It’s On With Alexa Chung,” Alexa accessorized a plaid dress by pulling on a pair of over-the-knee socks. On her, the socks create a cute and cozy look, but I’m not sure I’m gonna try to wear them, even though they would be a lot easier to pull off (and less of an investment) than this season’s thigh-high boots. When I was in high school, the “cool” girls would come to school wearing thigh-highs with short skirts, and I’m afraid pairing knee socks with a skirt would bring back memories of my adolescence.
What do you think of knee socks and thigh-high socks? Are they a style, like penny loafers, that look quirky on certain people (namely models and celebrities), but don’t work on the rest of us? [MTV, American Apparel]

I love them! I have been wearing them for years. It probably all started when I would thigh high leg warmers for dance classes—when socks go that high, it keeps the muscles warm and relaxed—so they’re a good thing to wear as it’s getting chilly now.

I like them. They’re more comfortable than tights, and often warmer.

I just don’t know what shoes you’d wear with them, although they look pretty cute with those heels!

Love them. Love them, love them, love them.
Way more comfortable than nylons, and they’re warmer in my cold office. They look cute with dresses and skirts (mine are longer; I’m too old for the bare skin between socks and skirt-hem look). Less constricting than full tights.
I have no shame: I wear mine with flats, boots, heels, anything. Today I’ve got black socks, black flat shoes, and a red-and-white calico flapper dress. My boyfriend calls this the “Minnie Mouse” outfit (affectionately).

I love them! In fact, I just ordered two pairs from Sock Dreams the other day. I’m not personally into the “schoolgirl” look, either, so I always wear them—either pulled up or scrunched slightly—with leggings. I think a pair of bright, striped OTK socks is a great way to add color and extra warmth to your basic “I’m cold and want to relax” tunic/sweater-leggings ensemble. Sometimes I even add an additional pair of thick, shorter socks for the layered look—and to add bulk below to even out my thighs.
I also wear OTK socks with a neutral-colored skirt and boots so there’s just a flash of color between the neutrals. One of my staple high school outfits (which I still love… yes, I still wear most of the components—I haven’t grown much and I tend to wear my clothes to bare threads) was a light brown corduroy almost-pencil skirt (ended just above the knee), black leggings, multi-color/width striped OTK socks (that was important: I hate it when all the stripes are the same width—way too Hot Topic), and either tall black riding-style boots or brown leather hiking boots. Throw on a fitted top or sweater and there I was.
Oh my gosh. Now I can’t wait for my Sock Dreams order to come! :-D

They’re cute on the right legs. Much like thigh-high boots, there is always the risk of leg-muffin-tops.

I love rocking over the knee socks! My favorite pair are like EXTRA long gray gym socks. They would most likely reach my arse if I wasn’t so athletically inclined in the thigh area.
If anyone’s curious, SockDreams.com is where I get all my socks, they have every length and style, I fell in love with OTK (over-the-knee) socks because of them about 4 years ago.

So if you have ever seen Dr Kelso from Scrubs showing off his calf muscles, that’s sort of what mine look like naturally, alas, high boots/socks/etc look horrendous on me. I can’t even be comfortable in a shoe that isnt a platform because of the bulge. These look so cute though maybe I will co-op the PJ idea.

I just bought some today!! Socks/leggings and earrings are my addictions. I might be wearing a paper bag but my legs/feet and ears always look good.

Oh BTW girls - Target actually has some cute OTK socks right now for like $7. Some of my sock dreams ones have given me that thigh high “muffin top” but my Target ones haven’t!
