How To Groom African-American Hair

Dear Angelina,
I commend you for your charity work and for adopting children of different ethnicities. However, I’ve noticed that you seem to require a little help with grooming little Zahara’s hair because you’re going about it all wrong. The only hairstyles you or her nanny seem to create on Zahara are two ponytails or a free-spirit curly Afro. But there are so many other styling options. And I’ll reveal some grooming secrets that will make your life, and hers, a lot easier, after the jump.

  1. Don’t wash her hair everyday. Moisture is very important to curly or coarse hair, so daily washings strip the hair and scalp of natural oils. However, when you do wash her hair once a week, you should use a shampoo that moisturizes and detangles, like Carol’s Daughter Rosemary Mint Shampoo With Sea Moss.
  2. Invest in a wide-tooth comb. This comb with wider set teeth will slip through Zahara’s curls with little effort or pain.
  3. Use a hair grease or moisture lotion for daily grooming. Some of the most tried and true products are Royal Crown Hair Dressing, Luster’s Pink Lotion or Softee Indian Hemp Hair & Scalp Treatment, which will restore shine, softness and manageability.
  4. Several ponytails are better than one or two. Zahara often sports two ponytails. But I caution you against this, Ange, because if the hair at her hairline is pulled too tight, it will start to recede. A few ponytails, like two in the front and two in the back will alleviate stress on the hair.
  5. Cornrows are a girl’s best friend. Zahara’s hair will also look cute in two-strand twists. She can keep these styles in for a few days with little upkeep, and they’re perfect for swimming.
  6. If all this sounds too complicated, then hire a professional. Or call me and I will come by for some in-person tutoring.

Yours Truly,
Annika

Dear Angelina, If I were you, I would take Annika’s advice. She has the most amazing head of dreadlocks that I have ever seen. Taking hair advice from her should be a no brainer. Yours truly, Amelia

i find it funny as a black woman that when i tell my friends that i only wash my hair once a week and sometimes every two weeks (dont judge me) they get grossed out.  so thanks annika for shedding some light on the plight of a black woman and her many hair issues.

Praise jeezy for this post Annika! I’ve been waiting on someone to publicly acknowledge the need for a little moisturizer on Baby Z.

oh, you have dreads? can you please make a post on how to judge whether they’re for you or not, you know, regarding personality, maintenance, ideal hair length, and face shapes? i’m really curious about getting some.

Thank you for this PSA Annika!  As the mother of a little brown girl, I’ve often had the same thought.  And Brad is quoted on the Carol’s Daughter website, so they are aware of the products.

i guess it had to be said but give her a break, Harris.  she should get a black nanny who’s not very old.  also, i don’t agree to any ponytails but ‘plats’ which are box braids in variations of sizes (like Caribbean girls.) the plats are low maintenance and ANYONE can adorn them with ribbons, bows or clips.  they also last long.  with Z’s length and texture loosely ‘plat’ braids are the best thing for maintenance and growth.
i thought someone suggested carol’s daughter to brad and angie…perhaps they should chat with jada and will.
you took it back with press and curl pomade - you rock!
