Is Going Eyebrowless The New Trend? Please Say It Ain’t So

We’ve all had those eyebrow accidents where something goes wrong with the wax, or you go pluck-crazy and are left with a teensy row of hairs above your eyes. What if those “accidents” started happening on purpose? In an article that reads more like an April Fool’s joke than serious journalism, The New York Times reports that the latest beauty trend is razed eyebrows. Yes, as in no brows. See, Kim Kardashian even did it.

The newspaper’s interview subjects cite a several different reasons for going all bare, some of which come off as cult-y and obsessive—one girl shaves to achieve an asexual air, an “exercise in modernity,” as she puts it. Another said he was following in the footsteps of Thai Buddhist monks. These two people seem like outliers, so who makes up the rest of the movement? Recessionistas, speculates the Times: “Could no eyebrows be a reflection of economic downturn? Can one be too poor to have them? Having no eyebrows is certainly a way to express oneself without buying a product.” Vogue beauty director Sarah Brown seemingly confirms this idea, stating, “People are saying, ‘How can I shake things up? I might not be buying a new bag every three months, but what can I do to feel fresh and current and in style?’” Ms. Brown is so in touch with the American people!

As a final suggestion to readers interested in the trend, the Times advises: “Before shaving off both eyebrows, we suggest doing just one to see if it suits you.” That was a joke, right? No, really…we have no idea if that’s serious.

How do you prefer your eyebrows? Super-thin? Or full and bushy?

I’m not a fan of the no-eyebrow look except on people who can’t have them (chemo, those born without body hair, etc.). I’m not a fan of immensely bushy eyebrows, but I personally prefer wider brows to these single-hair-thin ones. I just… very much do not like really thin ones.

And, btw, I love the “razed eyebrows” phrase. Well done! smile

Kim Kardashian is hot even without eyebrows but I don’t see myself taking a razor to my face anytime soon unless I start to grow a beard.

Unless you’re serving drinks in Ten-Forward and giving a bald Brit some sage advice, please, just put the razor down.

She didn’t shave them off, her makeup artist merely used wax to cover them for that photoshoot.

Ditto on the Marylin Manson.

Eyebrows really make an expression. Shaving them off is like botox times a million. And the last thing I need is to make my forehead (five-head, really) look even bigger.

drew barrymore on the cover of W did that months ago—but she happen to have an amazing job of it, not the kind of work just anyone is going to get…although if i wanted to, I could because i just happen to be friends with the master make-up maven that did it!!! (sorry, so had to brag that) ....but no way, I love brows—i wish I had more, big bushy and full of fun!

However, a bit of rejoycement for those of us redheads and blonds who have VERY light eyebrows.  We’ll fit in now!

Most people that even try it look like something that fell out of a rerun of deep space nine.

Wow! I don’t care if Johnny Depp showed up on my doorstep wearing just a pair of briefs promising me a good time, but only if he could shave my eyebrows…I wouldn’t do it. Well maybe for Johnny Depp, but I would take the article’s great advice and just shave one(lmao).

& the comment, “feel fresh and current and in style?” made me laugh!! Having no eyebrows would not make me feel “fresh”

@axdiva - Right on. I’m a redhead but my eyebrows are super light blonde. Other people without visible eyebrows might be a relief.
