Noooo! We’ll Soon Have To Pay For Hulu
Sit down. I’ve got some bad news to tell you. Hulu’s deputy chairman, Chase Carey, revealed at a conference this week that the watch-all-the-TV-you-want-for-free site won’t be gratis for much longer. As soon as next year, they’re looking into making Hulu a subscription service. “I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content,” said Carey. “I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value.” I appreciate the value, Chase! Does that change anything? [EW]

Many saw this coming from miles away. They couldn’t continue as a free service. However, once they make it subscription, they’re gonna have to bring in some other content you can’t already find for free (Discovery Channel, etc.), or people will leave.

thats really too bad. I guess they cant afford to make it a free service, but the entire point of their popularity is that they are free. who is going to pay for Hulu?? its a no- win situation.

Wonder if You Tube will follow suit on content not created by the person doing the upload? It wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t see a problem with it as long as the price is reasonable - kind of like a video version of iTunes.

I think this is fair. There is a lot of content available. But then, I’m not a network TV fan.

They’ve got a lot of good stuff, but they’ll need to have more before people are willing to pay for it. I haven’t owned a tv in years at this point and have been using hulu alongside netflix as a tv sub. My initial reaction is to be all ‘hellzno!’ ... but if their subscription rates are reasonable, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal.

I’m with CheeeeEEEEse. Why would you start paying for Hulu when there are still torrent and streaming sites that don’t give you viruses and don’t charge?

This was coming…didn’t everyone see this??
Besides, Hulu is hugely overrated. There are NO full-length films (of any worth) on it, and the TV series it covers are, for the most part, crap. I suppose if you want to catch every episode of “Glee” or “Flash Forward,” you might love it…but other than that, no thanks.

Meh… I’m not paying for it. But I will watch the heck out of the tv shows before I can’t anymore.

How about the shows they show on Hulu can be found for free on all the different network sites that they’re shown on. Even HBO and Showtime offer edited episodes of their most popular.
#&@$%, I say…

Agreed with the person above me. If I miss SNL, I can always go to NBC. No skin off my nose.

My chest feels tight. My head is spinning. Pay for HULU?! What next? Air? Life? Liberty? The pursuit of happiness?

A. they better add more content
B. They need to take out commercials then
C. Even more of a reason to continue torrenting.
and @ginger
Because so many people have no idea how to download, especially without using the ones that give you viruses. And the fact that people dont know the correct way to do it to make sure you dont get caught. These people dont know that theyre missing ;]
not that i know anything about it… *looks around

I knew it would happen eventually. Isn’t that always the way, you find something cool, start liking it, then they wanna charge for it. But like some of the others above was saying, if they are going to do that they need to add way more content, get rid of the commercials, or else people are gonna stop using it. I can find most of that stuff for free someplace else anyway.

Why do you all think paying for a service will eliminate commercials? Cable and satellite come with a price and a LOT more commercials than hulu has ...
