One Life HIV Awareness Campaign

This new AIDS Awareness campaign from One Life finally uses sex to sell an effective message—when you sleep with him, you’re sleeping with everyone in his past. Click on over to Trendhunter to see a few more graphic images—including a woman giving a blowjob to a handgun. One more image, after the jump…

@impoddity - dind’t your mother ever tell you that condoms are one of the Four Things You Always Buy Retail? The other three being lube, tampons and vibrators. Be good to your vagina and your vagina will be good to you!

I think it’s an interesting ad and hopefully it’s effective in its message. I think the woman giving a blowjob to a handgun takes it a little too far though, because it’s directly correlating a penis as being so harmful that it’s fatal, where it seems that they are missing the key point on that ad.

Zandra - Amen to your comment - wholesale can be a disaster. I once used a lube I bought at such a place and even after reading the label and seeing it was *identical* to the one I usually buy, it burned something awful and I ended up at my gyn for treatment - and no sex for 3 weeks! Wholesale condoms are literally ‘blow-out’ specials- definitely not worth the risk.

I think there was an article on this site by Dr.V about giving bj’s without a condom. She mentioned that genital warts have now been found in people’s throats! So at least if it’s a casual fling or one-nighter, it might be worth using one (along with a flavored lube if that’s what you like). I know, I know, it’s not the same and if you are married or in a long term relationship, probably not necessary.

I think the ad itself is pretty good and should be shown to teens and others who have abandoned safe sex these days. It has to be graphic to get their attention. JMO

@Zandra:  Please!!  I don’t believe I’ve ever heard my mother say the word ‘vagina’ and I was the one who initiated “the sex talk” (when I was kindly redirected to the library’s sex ed section).  I was the one who bought my sister her first pack of condoms because my mother refused to put her on birth control.

adameve.com and undercovercondoms.com are two of my favorite websites.  smile

@wonderfultonight - haha, a little extension on your ‘warts in throat’ thing..
My friend is a dental assistant. She had a patient come in after complaining of bad breathe and such for a couple months, and his girlfriend said it could be gum disease related.
So they both come in, and he gets looked at, and come to find out, its HIV, yes, HIV causing his nasty mouth odor. um, talk about ew. Poor girlfriend was mortified, and acted quite surprised, probably because she realized it wasnt from her. ouccch.

I stumbled across a campaign similar to this a while back that’s even a bit more graphic.

@CayleeKay - OMG! Even the thought of that is so awfully EW! Maybe we should get “Dr.V” to update her article - SOON!

CaleeKey:  I think you mean HPV.  Let’s hope it’s HPV and that you’re not being so flippant about HIV.

It is appalling to think that all that campaigning and information so readily available in the 80’s - 90’s could go by the wayside.  From what I’m reading, aside from a very small handful of people on here, ALL of you need to read about HIV - which is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and is the viral infection that can lead to AIDS or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

HPV, on the other hand, is the Human Papilloma Virus - which causes genital warts.

They are very different and to be so flippant as to use the word “ew” is downright offensive. One causes warts and the other can kill you.  Golly, one might want to consider educating themselves, just a bit.  Don’t ya think?

Oh, and by the way, my best friend IS HIV positive and he lives with the knowledge that any day the virus may become resistant to his anti-viral drugs and then it is only a matter of time before he is issued a death sentence.  He told me back in 1992 and I keep it in the back of my mind that he is now “on borrowed time.”  Back in the 80’s, people were dying within months of being diagnosed with the virus.  I watched some good friends decline and then die an undignified death.

If the person you wrote about was, indeed, diagnosed as HIV positive and your attitude is one of “ew” then you have shown us that you are quite ignorant, indeed.  Unbelievable.  Not only is there YOUR response but another silly person who writes “ew”.

Are you children about 12?

You must be really, really, really, young and don’t understand yet about a virus that is blood borne and can kill you simply by having sex once with an infected person and IF you are exposed to it and it enters your blood stream.  Using a condom should be a FACT ALWAYS for ANY new partners in your sex life.  ALWAYS.

And to the person who thinks the image of a woman with a gun in her mouth in reference to a blow job is too much?  No, honey, that isn’t too strong an image if it gets younger people to protect their bodies.

Sex is great but is it worth dying over?  Also, before you have sex, go learn about what viruses, bacterial infections, lice, etc. that you can catch and then PROTECT your body accordingly.  It isn’t difficult but if you are as ignorant as you come across, you are exactly the sort of person who will have sex ONCE with a person without bothering to use a condom and then wonder how it could have EVER have happened to you.  It only takes once, baby, only once…..Now go do some research.

Before anyone responds with how “harsh” the above post comes across, keep in mind that ANYONE can catch HIV or various other sexually transmitted infections, simply by not protecting themselves.  That includes you too, “I-only-had-sex-once” kids.
