Jean Touitou, designer of French brand A.P.C., had a Q&A with Hypebeast recently. Touitou had some harsh criticisms for the American male physique. “It’s impossible to have a huge man look elegant, that’s why in Asia they’re usually more handsome because the proportions are better,” he said. Now I’m not really into beefcakes, but there are some American male celebrities who look elegant in suits. And also, Touitou shouldn’t generalize the physiques of American because not all have “big chest and broad shoulders with skinny legs.” Fourteen male celebs in suits is enough to prove him wrong and add some brightness to your day.

Some of these suits did not look so great in my opinion, more ostentatious than anything.

I’m sorry, but this is just proof that women have NO idea what classic menswear is supposed to look like. Most of those were complete disasters. Bradd Pitt was probably the only well-dressed one of that lot.

Look again, and check for these details: jacket sleeves (almost ALL too long), pant length (again, way too #&@$% long and looks rumpled), too wide at the shoulder, ugly color coordination (Puff + others).

If you have that much money, you should at least hire someone to tell you how a suit should fit.

I always like to see some edgy detail or accessory signature to a guy’s personality when he wears a suit. It signals he’s wearing the suit, it’s not wearing him.

Men in a hot cut “uniform” always look great, but I sure wish you guys had more flexible and expressive choices in menswear for biz and dress/formal occasions. Women can go wild in theirs (to our horror too, sometimes), but men are restricted to seasonal nuances of vents, tie widths, 2-buttons or 3, etc, that live in that closet for a very long time. Like ordering the special coffee du jour at Starbucks that’s going to have last you for a month.

Break out and go crazy with it!

Classic menswear like suits differs greatly from womens clothing. Womens clothing is almost without exception designed to be trendy for a season or two, then never worn again. The detail given to construction and quality of fabric in menswear is almost entirely nonexistent in womens clothing.

Real men, not boys mindlessly buying what GQ tells them to, have suits and shoes that hold up 10, 20+ years. Take a look at Prince Charles. He’s worn his same pair of shoes for over 40 years, just getting them resoled. That’s what men’s clothing is.
