MTV To Possibly Ruin “Skins,” The Best Show Ever, By Bringing It To The States

Hells yeah! MTV is developing a U.S. version of the popular British show “Skins.” If you’ve never seen “Skins” before, I hereby order you to add it to your Netflix queue. Oft-compared to “Degrassi,” I say “Skins” is the absolute best TV show about teenagers that I’ve ever seen. And not campy good, like “Gossip Girl,” but really good.

On the show, teenagers are treated like actual young adults with real-life teenager problems, like parents remarrying, being cheated on, unrequited love, or eating disorders. There’s no “Oh, I inherited my billionaire dad’s company, what am I to do?” b.s. here. Each episode focuses on one kid in a group of suburban high school friends and deals with how their friends and family screw them up more or help keep them sane. It’s unclear if “Skins” in the U.S. will transport similar characters from any of the seasons from the U.K. show. The Hollywood Reporter merely said the U.S. “Skins” cast will have teenagers aged 16 to 19 and will likely be set in Baltimore.

MTV beat out CW in bidding for the rights to “Skins,” which hopefully means it will be less trashy? (It’s hard to tell.) Unlike our stateside teen dramas, there’s a lot of cursing, very little sex or hooking up on the show and—shocker!—the actresses actually dress like real teenage girls do. The jury is out as to whether MTV will suck-ify the most rad show ever, so add the U.K. “Skins” to your queue to prep and stay tuned… [The Hollywood Reporter]

I’m betting on MTV to ruin it. It sounds like something they’ll try to “glam up”, much like “The Real World”. Back when RW started, it actually featured real-looking people; then it got to the point where they were only featuring “beautiful people”. So if that’s any indication, I have a feeling MTV will water it down and make it less realistic than the original. Then again, that sort of thing tends to happen when British shows are adapted for an American audience.

They’ll totally ruin it. Skins is great because it’s so harsh and it shows how they are all screwing eachother and theyre all doing drugs all the time. They will never show all the stuff they show in the U.S. If they really wanted to do a good job they should just show the UK ones. They’re awesome- kinda like the Movie Thirteen but you actually like the characters. And the actors can act, something that MTV isn’t fond of…..

There’s a lot of sex, hooking up and cursing on Skins too, it’s just more realistic than on shows like The OC and Gossip Girl. I think I’ll just stick with my DVDs and skip the remake.

With the US sensors the way they are, I highly doubt it will be ANYTHING like the UK version. And without all that, it will be less real. Hello! Teenagers swear like truckers and life is often explicit. I just know MTV is going to change it somehow to make it more “cool” or whatever.
If they stay true to the original idea, they might just be okay.

I haven’t even watched Skins (though it is on my list of things to start watching) but I know that MTV will ruin it.

I actually don’t think Skins is much more realistic than shows like Degrassi… Skins is WAY over the top. It’s a decent show, but I find myself rolling my eyes ALL the time when I watch it. People aren’t actually that crazy in real life. It got even more silly when the original cast was replaced. And anyway, MTV will probably edit the hell out of it - I can’t imagine Skins would ever ever air unedited on American TV, except maybe on HBO.
