Miley Cyrus’ “You’re Gay” Lyric Change Is Dumb
Miley Cyrus did another stupid teenager thing—she altered the lyrics in her song “7 Things” on the fly at her recent Louisville concert. She changed “you’re vain/you’re games” to “you’re vain/you’re gay.” She’s probably not a gay-bashing, homosexual agenda-fearing lady (she’s actually come out in support of gay marriage), like one Miss America Pageant runner-up we know, but it wasn’t a stellar moment either. She better watch out, or she’ll influence an entire generation of girls to use gay in the pejorative sense.

I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt, and say that she probably just mispronounced the lyric from being out of breath or singing too quickly.
But man, if only she had her ‘official’ twitter to clear this all up! Darn!

@Peacock: my thoughts exactly. I think that episode pretty much sums things up and—for better or worse—I’ve been making jokes about it since I watched it the other night. Just in my house, though…I’m not walking around town shouting that! I was watching a show about the Sturgis Rally with my husband last night that gave me ample opportunities to throw it out there!
AND I was behind a truck for a company called ‘Flag Pros’ yesterday and someone had peeled off the ‘L’...its like I can’t get away from it now that I’ve seen that episode. And they obviously picked that word to represent a few in similar circumstances in today’s culture. I just love those guys. Sometimes it seems like they are the only ones in America with a platform for mass communication left with any remnant of common sense.

WTF people, isn’t it just possible that “your games” sounds like “you’re gay?”

the girls recording the video said, “she said gay!” but really “you’re lame/you’re games” is kind of a dumb lyric anyway.

Yeah, how is “you’re games” a correct usage of the English language in ANY way?

Reality check: Words can have more than one definition.
Reality check #2: Word definitions can change over time.
The homosexual community (of all communities) should be keenly aware of this. The word “gay” was not initially put in the dictionary with homosexuality in mind, as we all know. The term “gay” became associated with homosexuality much later in the word’s life span.
Currently, the word “gay” has taken on a third definition that seems to be a synonym of “cheesy” or “tacky” (as in “That’s so gay”). The very fact that the term is used by people like Miley Cyrus, who CLEARLY supports homosexual rights, should be evidence enough that the intention behind the use of the word “gay” in this manner is not bigotry. Therefore, there is no justifiable reason to be offended.
I’d be willing to bet that everyone reading this post has used the word “gay” in a similar manner at some point in their lives. Hell, most of the homosexuals I know (of both genders) say it in this way too.
Language is a living thing. It changes and evolves.
Deal with it.

@Oreo that was the exact same point made in the South Park of last week.
I’m also in the camp that you can’t tell if she said gay or games. Although, they did edit out “gay” from Taylor Swift’s song “Picture to Burn.” At least on the radio cut, after about the first week. And it literally means homosexual in that song, as far as I can tell.

Sorry. I haven’t seen South Park in years. I wouldn’t mind seeing this episode though.
