Miley Cyrus Voted The Worst Influence Of 2009

The tween readers of AOL’s JSYK.com (for you people above the age of 15, that’s “Just So You Know”) have voted Miley Cyrus the worst celebrity influence of 2009. Why? Because of that pole-dancing stunt at the Teen Choice Awards? Or because of her reckless endangerment of Fuzzy? After the jump, let’s look at a list of celebrities who we think deserve the title for worst influence WAY more than Miley. [Yahoo]

  • Kanye West showed himself to be a much worse influence, when it comes to interrupting and not taking turns. [MTV]
  • Anna Faris says she accidentally “sent a text to a small child, asking the small child if they wanted to get drunk with me.” Which should by far beat Miley’s back-baring in Vanity Fair. [Amy Grindhouse]
  • Amy Winehouse had Sharon Osborne worried to death about her influence on her recovering drug addict daughter, Kelly. This makes Miley’s refusal to tweet seem even more benign, despite developing stories. [Celebrity Smack Blog]
  • Kate Moss and Pete Doherty apparently joined Amy to inspire their own study, by the United Nations, which examines how celebrity junkies are a bad influence. [Mail & Guardian]
  • And what about the royal triumvirate of bad girl influences? I’ve seen some change in Britney’s behavior, but “the underwear-challenged trio” (of her, Lindsay and Paris) could probably just keep re-crowning themselves the worst influence every year. [Into Gossip]

Who do you think should have won?

Miley wins hands down. She’s off an age where tweens feel that she’s part of their world - where everyone else on that list would rightly be considered ‘ancient’ by tween standards. Dating a 20 year old, open contempt for your parents, flaunting her underwear online in sexy pics (and I’m not talking about the professionally taken ones) public bullying with the use of youtube on other actors who are rivaling her queendom. The list goes on and on, Miley sucks and I’m glad the kids are smart enough to know that for themselves.

I’m with FrzKey. Those other “stars” do not cater to the tween set - Miley does. She’s the one with Hannah Montanna crap everywhere (remember back-to-school shopping?), on the disney chanel, and concerts for tweens. But she’s also the one with a much older boyfriend, questionable clothing and pictures, and pole dancing! Plus, bullying is a BIG problem - esp. cyber-bullying is happening more and more. Her videos were shameful. The only thing more shameful are her parents. Is there a poll anywhere for the worst parental influence?

We also need to remember that while Miley is almost 17, most of her fans are younger, closer to 9-13. There’s a lot of growing up happening during these years. I for one just want these kids to have fun and not feel like they have to grow up so fast!

i stand by the fact that although i’ve been her target audience i’ve stayed above the influence. when she falls into the dark oblivion of disney channel’s hall of shame i won’t shed a tear. they all will same with Demi Lavato, Selena Gomez, this new girl for Good Luck Charlie. personally, i stopped caring about disney channel when they sold out a looong time ago.

I remember this past summer talking to the girls I used to babysit for, who were 10 and 13 then, and they both used to watch Hannah Montana but by then had decided that Miley was overrated (like how you can’t take 3 steps in Wal-Mart without passing Hannah/Miley merchandise). I found it rather amusing, since they’re in the target demographic.

I agree that there are definitely worse role models, but yes, the younger demographic has to be taken into account. I’m still not sure she’s the WORST influence, but I can’t think of anyone else to counter it.

I am highly offended that The Frisky selected Kanye West to be included in the list of Worst Celebrity Influences.  The fact that he was #3 on this list is even more offensive!  I personally believe that Kanye west is an extremely positive influence on youth, particularly African-American youth.  He is our leader, and I strongly support him.  He should NOT have been included on this list period!

What IS IT with the pole-dancing already. I took two of my girls to see Britney in Circus…she had poles all over the place, the most i counted was 7 in one set, plus two on carts that were crisscrossing the stage…

i thought ‘good’ dancers don’t need poles?? smile

I’m pretty sure I visibly twitch whenever this girl comes on the radio or TV. She is by far the worst influence out there right now for young girls. She is a child trying to grow up too fast and doing so on stage in front of the entire world. And as for the other people on the list, it seems to me like only a matter of time before Miley joins the Lindsays and Britneys of the world and its a huge relief that at least some of the younger demographic can see that

Stephanie Meyer’s entire series is a play on abstinence, how is she a bad influence?

@Cool - You’re offended that Kanye was included? He is absolutely a disgusting human being! He has no regard for others, horrible manners, and is one of the most arrogant people on the planet. I don’t want my kids acting the way he does! He’s practically illiterate, too. Have you read any of his blogs? They’re all set on Caps Lock and he can barely type! It’s really sad that an adult acts the way he does. He’s nothing but shock value.

lindsley, Kanye has a long way to go to be a disgusting human being and since when is typing skill used in determining literacy?  Hate the man all you want, but he is not illiterate.  Geez, the way some go on about Kanye, you would think he posed for a picture, grinning with some douche wearing a swastika on his tee shirt, like a certain, unamed sweetheart “role model.”

I don’t think it is fair to label Miley as the worst influence without putting the cult of celebrity worship and poor parenting choices on the top of the list.  This girl should never have been taken so seriously that she should be responsible for the self-esteem and life choices of every kid who crosses her path.  Teenaged Miley is not an adult, or a parent, so how did she become the one responsible for raising her fans?  And why isn’t she allowed to make the same mistakes that other teens make?

God, I would hate to grow up under public scrutiny.

My vote would go to parents as the worst influence of the year, every year.

Far more kids are screwed up by their own parents than all of Hollywood could ever hope to warp.

Life was just a little simpler before she became a “tween” star. Or whatever the hell “tween” means. God I hate that word. I despise her music, and her show, and I just wish that I could hit the delete button on any talk about her. And my little rant about Miley is over.

@kl564063 for several reasons two of which being that abstinence is hardly a typically effective way to get girls to be confident, sexually responsible young women, and the fact that her novels promote disturbingly co-dependent relationships and behaviors that many of the readers are likely to emulate.

First, do kids even know who the other people on the list are? I can’t imagine a 13 y/o rocking out to retro jazz/soul music. And Kate Moss and that other guy? My big question is, why the hell isn’t Chris Brown on the list?

@lindseylee21- Yes I am still offended that Kanye was included on this degrading list!  He is NOT a “disgusting human being”. Apparently, you don’t even know what one is!  Here’s some: Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Lindsey Lohan, and Britney Spears, whom are all disgusting!  Kanye is an awesome role model who does have regard for others: He stood up for the starving victims of Hurricane Katrina, continues to be an excellent advocate for his people, and is the BEST thing that ever happened to music!  I will always support Kanye West, my leader!  And as far as him being illiterate, how can he be illiterate and be an amazing lyricist, outstanding author, and the former fashion columnist for “Life and Style” magazine?!
