Celebs with long hair

What is with Young Hollywood’s scissor aversion? If you’re not shaving half your head, you’re growing hair long enough to hit your waist! (From the looks of it, Lauren Conrad and Lindsay Lohan are front-runners, FYI.) It’s beyond mermaid-ish at this point—as far as I’m concerned, it’s getting downright icky, and that hair can’t be healthy (especially with all the coloring, blow drying and flatironing stars subject their heads to). According to her Twitter, Lindsay claims short hair isn’t for her: “I don’t think the director wants it short ... I look ugly with short hair! Eeeeks.” I beg to differ. At the very least, chop off five or six inches. She won’t even notice the change! Lauren Conrad, also unconvinced on the short hair front told US Weekly: “I don’t feel girly without long hair! There is something so sexy about having long blonde hair ... It’s so feminine.” Now, I’m all for long hair, but when it gets so far gone that it gets caught in your armpits on a regular basis, it has to go. (Anyone else ever experience this? No?) What say you? Long and sexy? Or just long and ... long?

Long hair getting caught in armpits, car doors, and getting pinned under my shoulders any time I lay down or leaned back: check.  Long hair taking way more time that I have to devote to my looks: check.  Long hair chopped the eff off after I had enough: check.

Short hair ftw!

I disagree. My mother’s family is Sikh (Indian Culture/Religion), and traditionally in that culture you do not, do not, do not cut your hair. Men too, though they wear it up in those iconic turbans.

I can’t practically adhere to that standard (I work in wastewater engineering…) so I grow it to about my waist and then donate 12-16” at a shot.

Long hair is like a lot of things, if taken care of, and suited to the individual it can be really a beautiful thing. Long, wispy, dry, brittle, overprocessed hair? Ick!

I also disagree… my hair is easier to take care of when it’s long, because it’s thick and curly and the weight makes it behave. I’ve grown mine to the small of my back, and it’s extremely healthy—the dual reasons I’m cutting off about 10 inches are 1) I’m getting neck pain, and 2) I’m donating it.

If there was no pain, and if it couldn’t help someone with a serious illness, I’d probably keep it this long because I like it (as does everyone in my life and multiple strangers who approach me about it on a daily basis).

It’s okay to prefer short hair, but why is it wrong to prefer long?

I don’t get why it’s so gross. I’ve had long hair (like Lauren Conrad long) for almost my entire life, with three one-year-long interludes of short to very short hair, and though it can be annoying to have it blow everywhere in the wind, get tangled up just by sitting down on a high-backed chair, and the inevitable awkward and painful moments when a boy accidentally pulls it by pushing down on the pillow under your head while making out, I’ve always really liked having long hair. If you take care of it properly, it’s fine. Also, I’ve never gotten it stuck in any doors or in my armpits for that matter, and again, it’s generally the length of Lauren Conrad’s or a few inches shorter.
But to each their own. I think Lauren Conrad, Lindsay Lohan, and Kim Kardashian all look nice with their hair long, and if they like it than what’s it to us?

My hair was down to my butt at one point and it was a beautiful sunkissed blonde color (natural) and since it was so long the weight of it kept it pretty straight and I loved it except for the annoyance of it getting caught under my butt, insane amounts of shampoo and conditioner I went through and of course the fact that my hair was constantly damp because I could never spend the time to blow dry it completely but since I live in Florida I wore it up a lot because it’s just too hot not to. I went crazy 2 years ago and chopped it off donating the pony tail. Now I have shoulder length jet black hair and I miss my long hair.

LOL! Was this intended to be a serious post? Why do you care how someone else grows their own hair? Aren’t we working toward a society that is more tolerant? So we’re going to nitpick about hair length? Seriously? Puh-lease! Next topic!

My preference is long hair.  I used to have hair to my waist, then for a change, I lopped it off and now it sits just below my shoulders (which is still kinda long, but I need more!)  SIGH!... I am kinda depressed about it.  I loved my hair.  Never again!!

I love long hair! Hair that falls to your waist is not too long..any longer and I don’t think it looks good. And Kim’s hair looks beautiful. Just because the trend right now is chopping your hair doesn’t mean that everyone has to.

Like all hairstyles, whether or not you can pull it off depends on your face and depends on the texture of your hair.  For me, when my hair was in waist-length ringlets it looked really cool and I received a lot of compliments on it, but it wasn’t as flattering to my face as my now-short style.  I find that long hair, even when it looks fabulous, draws attention to itself rather than the woman who’s growing it!

@ Perceptible: your comment didn’t really come off as being more tolerant either.  If you think a post is silly, don’t read and comment on it.

I agree with EscapeHatch,
mu culture admires long hair and we let it grow very very long. I am letting mine grow down to my waist to also donate it. I’m donating it to a girl who has cancer at my co-workers son’s school. I’m really excited to do this, she’s barely beginning chemo so its eventually going to all fall off and she told my friend that all she wanted was hair. I think long hair is beautiful, and I also think personal choice is liberating, so do what you feel. If you like long or short, its up to you.

I like long hair too, but I do think some people (i.e. Miss Lohan) let it get stringy rather than take care of it properly.  Also, a lot of long-haired celebrities have extensions, which seem kinda gross to me.

I love my long hair.  It’s naturally stick straight so I never have to low dry it and I don’t color it so it’s very healthy.  As long as you take care of your hair and don’t over-process it long hair can be a great look.  I think it’s very romantic and soft.

My hair is down to my butt and I love it.  Just like heartinwa my hair is curly so the weight helps me control it.  I have virgin hair (no coloring, heat, etc) so it’s very healthy.  I have no problem with short hair, but it’s just not for me.

Long hair in Hollywood is part of the Barbie culture… plus LA’s economy is dependent on the services of salons doing hair extensions. If they could do leg extensions, too, they would.

I personally have *never* been able to grow long hair, so can’t relate to the neckpain, armpit and ass debacles. Tho I’ve been wistful for it from time to time. But even when I love a new haircut, I still mourn a little the first week when the reality sinks in, in the confessional shower at shampoo time.

Fortunately, I have easy-style hair even at shoulder length. Relating to looks for me, I learned a long time ago nature knows what it’s doing and to not change things too much with artificial processes, imo. Except for that dying part…

@retro chic - //If they could do leg extensions, too, they would. //  lol!

Long hair has the potential to be super pretty, I just found it way too much of a pain to keep up, especially with camping/just being active. I’m surprised people are taking this so personally though, I read this post as “look at these girls who can afford haircuts and decent styling who appear to have stopped bothering altogether” - especially since the lady in the picture on the right is the only one whose hair actually looks nice.

Long hair is not gross. My hair has been every possible style from pixie cut, to bob, to shoulder length, to long Jennifer Aniston-ish layers. At 5’10 with an hourglass figure, everytime I cut it all off, I love the hairstyle, but hate what it does to my proportions. I love the femininity of long middle of the back hair. I keep it trimmed every 4 weeks and wash it, at least, every other day. Plus it allows me to have fun with tons of different styles, from pony tails, to braids, to chignons and french twists.

In high school, I grew my hair to the middle of my back. My hair is insanely thick (it was fairly straight back then, though as I’ve aged it’s gotten wavy), and for whatever reason I thought it’d be an even better idea to keep it 1 length. It got in the way of stuff a lot (especially my bookbag), and it was HEAVY. I cut it to a layered shoulder-length style halfway through my senior year and vowed never to grow it that long again, and I haven’t. It was too much of a hassle for me. Now, fast forward a few years later and my now-ex husband insisted my hair stay long (althought it didn’t get quite to the aforementioned length). After I left him, one of the first things I did was chop it as a symbol of my independence. I keep it above my shoulders or shorter now; it’s just easier to deal with, and I know I can pull off most shorter styles anyway.

That being said, I don’t see the harm in other folks having long hair if that’s what they prefer, as long as it’s well-maintained.

I have long blonde hair that is down to the small of my back, and I get a lot of compliments on it whenever I take the time to fix it. It’s healthy, full and wavy like Jessica Simpson’s and I love it.

The bad thing is, every hair dresser I have ever gone to has tried to talk me into cutting it. My best friend is my hair dresser and she had hair as long as mine and cut it, and everyday I hear her bitch about how misses it. Yet everytime she trims mine, she tells me to cut it off because short hair is “in”.

I don’t care if it is in or out, long hair looks better on me. I take care of it, and it suits me well. I also don’t understand why everyone that tells me to cut is are the same people that are taking vitamins to grow theirs out again. It’s about personal preference, and mine is long.

My hair is almost easier to manage long than short.  Long, I can better pull it out of my face and keep it under control.  Short, it flies all over and gets in my face [short, in my case, meaning “bobbed”].

Long hair shouldn’t take that much more shampoo—you only wash the part of it nearest your head, unless you spill something on it.  The “dirt” is mostly skin oil, so the long part shouldn’t need to be washed as often.  Mine dries out horribly if I wash parts of it that don’t really need it.

Mine takes forever to dry long, too, but oh, well.  Sometimes it doesn’t dry when it’s short, either, since it’s so humid here.

I’ve had long hair for most of my life. But I don’t use anything stronger than conditioner on it so it’s still healthy.

Also, I’ve always lived in cold places. Long, thick hair keeps me warm in the winter.

Someday I might cut it (and if I do, I’m donating it) but for now I’m very happy with my long hair.

I’m on the long hair bus—though I’ve decided to keep mine a smidge longer than nipple-length.

I say as long as it’s healthy and looks good, grow on.

Eh. I always think of how annoying it must be to cart that all around on your head all day long so I probably wouldn’t want it for myself, but I think hair that long is really pretty if done correctly.

Here’s my beef:

I don’t have a problem with long hair itself, but I have a problem with girls feel that ONLY long hair is romantic, beautiful, and feminine. I’ve had friends in high school who had just long, unlayered, mousey brown hair, and would have a conniption if a trip to the salon for a trim resulted in more than .2 inches being taken off the ends.

NEWS FLASH. This is 2009. Short hair is sexy too. Halle Berry anyone? Victoria Beckham? Heck, even Marilyn Monroe, sex icon for generations had shorter hair.

I’m not suggesting all long-locked beauties try out short hair because it’s trendy, I’m suggesting they try it because it’s sexy and confident. Than again, girls who believe their femininity only lives on through long locks probably can’t handle the sassiness of a shorter do anyway smile

When its extensions and you have them changed out every few months its easier to keep it long like that with all the color changes and heat damage these girls have had.  It just seems now that the extensions keep getting longer and longer.
