Mary-Louise Parker Regrets Getting Naked On “Weeds”

On “Weeds,” Mary-Louise Parker plays a sexy suburban mom who sells pot. Parker is cool with the druggy persona, but she isn’t happy about having to strip down during last season’s finale. In the scene, she bears all in a bathtub and the camera lingers on her boobs, a shot which obviously ended up all over the internet in a clip titled: “Mary Louise Shows off Her Big Nipples.” But was this nude scene unnecessary—or totally awesome?
In a recent interview with More, Parker says she was “goaded” into doing the scene. “I didn’t think I needed to be naked. I fought with the director about it, and now I am bitter,” she confessed.
But we’ve been seeing Parker’s girls since the ‘90s. There are topless shots of her in “Grand Canyon” and “Sugartime.” And in 2003’s “Angels in America,” Parker got stark naked. So, we’re not sure why a nipple shot was such a big deal.
Roberto Benabib, the show’s co-executive producer, is all about the scene. “I thought it was wonderful, one of the five best scenes Mary-Louise has ever done,” he said. And he’s careful to remind everyone there was a point to the scene. He says they wanted to show that Parker’s character was vulnerable and that her defenses were “stripped away.”
In the world of raunchy celeb sex scandals, having a video of your self-proclaimed “big nipples” on the ‘net isn’t so bad. But what do you think: Was this scene warranted or wack? [NYPost]

I love, love, love Weeds & Mary-Louise Parker. A lot of times when I see scenes with nudity out of nowhere, it does sometimes seem out of place and unnecessary. However, I didn’t think anything negatively when I was MPP stripped down.
While I do def. think they could have done the scene differently, I agree with Benabib’s explanation of what kind of shot he was going for. I thought his vision really came through - I mean, she was taking a bath and was so broken down by stress that she didn’t seem to care about covering up. I would imagine that if I had her life, I’d be completely exhausted as well and say “screw it”.
I feel bad that MPP felt “goaded into it”. If she was that uneasy about the scene, then you’d think the producers could’ve been more accommodating for her.

on the plus side now that BSG’s done and Carla’s been killed off of Burn Notice (note to hollywood: somebody PLEASE give Tricia Helfer a job!) she’s now the undisputed hottest woman on television! :D
FWIW it may not have been nudity but I always thought the scene in season one where she boinked the other dealer who was threatening her seemed a little gratuitous and demeaning to her character (from behind w/her bent over a car).

I agree with your comment about the scene with the dealer. It did nothing for her (or the show, really) except make her seem trashy. I liked her character so I was willing to overlook it, but my boyfriend couldn’t believe she turned into “such a slut”

Now, now- doesn’t the old, “she’s done it once, she has to do to do it again” argument sound a little rapisty? It seems in the same vein of reasoning as when people say a girl who is somewhat promiscuous hasn’t been raped because she likes sex, so she wanted it. Maybe it’s just my Women’s Studies major rearing its ugly head, but I don’t buy it. She didn’t want to be nude, the director pushed her into it, she feels violated. Our feelings as the viewers really have nothing to do with it.
