Make Moving Easier With Pre-Labeled Packing Tape

Moving is a big ole pain in the behind, so we’ll take anything that makes the process even a tiny bit more manageable. That’s why we’ll be picking up some of this room-specific packing tape next time we switch apartments. Instead of scrawling labels on moving boxes (not so helpful if your handwriting’s illegible), just seal them up with the designated roll of tape. You’ll know where to put every single box. Or rather, you’ll know where to tell the movers to put every single box. [from $2.95, U-Haul via KK]

I hate packing and moving, so I don't know if this would really be all that helpful. I can imagine it going something like this:"UGH! WHERE IS THE STUPID KITCHEN TAPE?!?!?! Whatever, it's bathroom now!"

This seems like a good idea at first, but how many feet are in each roll? Colored duct tape is also about $3/roll at Walmart (in the paint section) and other stores with DIY supplies, so duct tape might be a much better deal.

As someone that has moved many many many times in my life (and preparing for another one soon), I don't know how much help these would really be. Most of my boxes are a mix of so many different rooms. I pack to have the fewest boxes possible, not to be super organized. I do mark the boxes with the room where most of the items go, but using abbreviations (MBR, K, LR, etc). Even when I tried to keep things organized I inevitably hit a point where the boxes are labeled 'misc' because I'm either out of time or out of energy.I have learned to label important items, though, since the last time I moved I couldn't remember which box had the phone or TV remote.

I just label it myself. Though I'm a big fan of fun organizational items!! I'm on an early spring cleaning kick this year right now. But soooo glad that I'm not moving for once- moved about a dozen times in the last 6 years or so! It's a huge pain and I've done it so many times that my first step becomes throw away as much stuff as possible! Things I thought I wouldn't want to part with start to seem unimportant and just a pain. If this actually helped I'd be all for it, but I can label just as easily.

a word of warning against this tape...while it is a fantastic idea and does make it easy to organize yourself THE TAPE DOES NOT STICK .... i got this exact tape from UHaul when I just recently moved, and I had to retape almost every box with actual shipping tape... but I just put clear tape over it so it was still easy to read where the boxes went!

Don't forget to write the contents of the box on the outside so you know what is in it.

Yeah I'm with Knitter79. I've moved tons of times and it's not easy. Especially when the army packs you. They do it so fast and you don't know where anything goes.
UGH! WHERE IS THE STUPID KITCHEN TAPE?!?!?!
Uh, I'm guessing it's in the kitchen, which is where I'm packing all the kitchen boxes.
Most of my boxes are a mix of so many different rooms. I pack to have the fewest boxes possible, not to be super organized.
My experience with both ways (I've moved WAY too much) has sold me on the other approach. Simple, clear, and unconfused beats less boxes every time.
a word of warning against this tapewhile it is a fantastic idea and does make it easy to organize yourself THE TAPE DOES NOT STICK ....
@JamieLee: Thank you for the bottom line. All the cleverness in the world comes up a little short when the boat doesn't float, the candle doesn't burn, and THE TAPE DOES NOT STICK.I'd already rather have a root canal than move again, so boxes that don't stay closed might be enough to push me over the edge.

I think they are fun. Unless they do not stick, as Jamie Lee stated. In this case off with the fancy tape and back to ugly brownish one.I always start with the obvious (DVDs, dishware, winter clothes...) but I end up labeling the last boxes "Crap", "assorted stuff", "a lil bit of everything", or "Not urgent". People helping me gets confused and annoyed and tend to pile up the randomly labelled boxes in the main room. I'd like some fancy tape that can help me organise the chaos. The big plus of moving is to get rid of all the stuff you have accumulated and do not need. I have moved 4 times in the last decade and have given away tons of stuff each times. It's scary.

One month of getting rid of the chaff on Freecycle. Two weeks of:Sharpies. Initials. K. LR. MBR. BR. GR. LIB. One type of clear packing tape. I'd never get the right amount of that room by room tape sorted out. One day of finding out who your friends really are and one vicious round of rock paper scissors to determine who has to take the truck back to UHAUL.Moving done.

A sharpie works just as well, and is a heck of alot cheaper than 30 rolls of lousy tape.

Just got these today for the up coming move. Spent my afternoon attacking boxes with fun coloured tape. Then I got annoyed when it hit me that I spent to much on to little of the tape. So now I will be left using one strip of the special tape to show what box goes where and use basic packing tape for the rest. Bummer.
